Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 0400. Got ready, got the bike and equipment in the car. Checked, double checked. Waited for Wendi, called a couple times when I realized she was probably still asleep. Headed out at 5am, hoping she'd be able to meet me there on time! And she did! We met up when she got her bike in transition and then she could calm down from all the rushing around...
Event warmup:

Went in the water a bit...water was warm. Got wet, walked back onto the beach. Talked to Wendi a bit, wished each other good luck.
Swim
  • 07m 34s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had a great swim. I was really happy. It was a slap-fest the whole way, but at least I wasn't in the back where no one was behind me. I was right up there with 'em. Probably my best swim yet.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing...I finally breathed right, swam right, sighted right, it was really a great swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

I was really fast in this transition. Even though this was my first time racing with the shoes and pedals, I did really well in T1 today.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 51m 5s
  • 15 miles
  • 17.62 mile/hr
Comments:

It started off good. 5 miles of being confident...then...absolutely HATEFUL bike experience today. Mile 5...seat falls to the bottom setting. Mile 8...right aerobar comes loose and pivots down. Mile 10...BIG cramp in my right quad. Mile 11...BIG cramp in my back. Struggled to make 16mph after all this. I had been doing 22mph until all the sh!t happened. I'm really really pissed off at the bike thing today. I was third or fourth in my age group coming out of the swim. The bike absolutely KILLED my race. I was last in my age group off the bike. 15 out of 15.

What would you do differently?:

Check my equipment better. These were things I don't normally check. I always just assume my seat is fine. Guess I"m gonna have to check every little thing now.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Kicked off my bike shoes. Swore, cursed, and growled at my bike and MYSELF as I racked it. Leg was hurting. Wanted to cry at the frustration of my horrible bike portion. Threw my helmet down, ate a gel, swigged some gatorade and I was off. Came across the line at 1:00:31.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...good transition.
Run
  • 23m 9s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

My run redeemed me a bit. Right out of transition I was ready to try to make up some time. Passed two people in the first minute. Passed about 10 more before mile 2. Two in my age group. Then about a quarter mile from the finish I saw a guy in a long sleeve shirt, I remembered him being in my age group. I gave it all I had, passed him and one other guy in my age group. I didn't wanna be last. Had I not F'ed the bike, I would have had a nice race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I was fast today in the run. Just kept telling myself "YOU CANNOT BE LAST, THAT WAS LAST YEAR." So I really wouldn't do anything different except be even faster!
Post race
Warm down:

Swore, cursed, said motherf***er a few hundred times. Had three bottles of water. Tried to eat a cookie but it wasn't happening. Waited for Wendit to come in but nature was calling. Took care of that and there she was, I missed her finish. :(

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My stupidity. My bike incidents really just KILLED the entire race today. I had a great swim and a great run, but the bike made it impossible to come back from. I'm really upset. I'd better have an AWESOME day at Dunedin next week. This race did NOTHING for my confidence, even though my run and swim were really good. It's not about the individual sports, it's about putting them all together and I did NOT do this today.

Event comments:

I would definitely do this race again. NO. I MUST DO THIS RACE AGAIN. Overall it was a good race, it's kinda upsetting that it's not chipped but they do record each split in case there are issues. So that's cool. I will definitely be back to RIP this one up. I have to get revenge on this course. I WILL PREVAIL. I AM Q.
