Pre-race routine:

NOTE: In order to appropriately read this race report, please add the phrase "while being eaten alive by bugs" to every sentence. As in, "I set up my transition area while being eaten alive by bugs" or "We listened to the pre-race briefing while being eaten alive by bugs". Good lord there were a lot of bugs.
Event warmup:

Got out of my car after parking and almost choked by swallowing a mouthful of bugs. Though to myself "well at least the transition area is a long way away, surely there will be less bugs over there." Wrong.
Swim

  • 704 yards
  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

It's been about 7 months since I swam in a wetsuit and I forgot how much I hate it. Looking forward to some non-wetsuit-legal races this summer.

Swim went ok I guess, although I was hoping to be in at around 10 minutes. The time includes a run of maybe 1/5 mile to transition area. A lot of folks were saying the swim course was marked long.
Transition 1
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

A little trouble with wetsuit but otherwise no issues. Extra incentive to hurry to avoid the bugs.
Bike
  • 1h 01m 48s
  • 20.5 miles
  • 19.90 mile/hr
Comments:

Was hoping to get into a nice pace but never really got there. For some reason I really had to struggle to sustain anything over 21mph.

Had hoped to average over 20mph for the leg and just missed that. Although again, the bike split includes a run to and from transition. Probably only about 150-200 yards each way, but any time spent running in cycle shoes is slow.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

No issues
Run
  • 36m 40s
  • 4 miles
  • 09m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Again struggled more than I had hoped. Took about 2.5 miles to get in rhythm and then fought a side stitch about a half mile later. Was hoping to at least be sub-9s after all the running I did this offseason.

This race was supposed to be an easy tuneup before Columbia, but I left thinking I have lots of work left to do.
Post race
Warm down:

Immediately leave the race area to avoid more bug bites.

Event comments:

Seemed like a very fast field for such a small/local event (or maybe I was just a total slug that day). A lot of people blowing by me on $5000 bikes.

A well organized race, but for me the bugs took most of the enjoyment out of it. I am writing this, I am scratching the approximately 6,000 bug bites on each of my arms and legs. I look like I have the freakin chicken pox.

Can't blame race management for the bugs I guess, but it would have been nice to get an email a day or two before warning us to bring some bug spray. I have no idea if the bugs are like this every year, but I probably won't be back to find out.

Course: Flat, but not so flat that you were in the same gear the whole time. Not a terribly exciting course - basically you go 10 miles straight down one road and then turn around and come back. I was following the people in front of me and I think maybe we all missed the quick right turn on Franklin Street. Not sure if that meant we cut the corner a bit, but my bike computer still said 21 miles at the end.
