Pre-race routine:

The usual, except I tried O's for breakfast instead of the usual bagel. Not that nutrition matters much in this race, but I need to start shaking things up to figure out what works.

I looked over the field last night and saw a chance for open master's 3rd place. I knew I'd need to beat both Chuck and Mike F. to get there (fortunately not also Brian, because although he could race masters, he's still racing open). So the plan was to watch them closely and hopefully get the job done on the run, which is the only thing I've really been training...
Event warmup:

Biked about 4 miles, swam about 300 meters.
Swim
  • 17m 44s
  • 1000 meters
  • 01m 46s / 100 meters
Comments:

No real chance to draft even though I finish right with two others -- we didn't seem to be near each other until the end.

I wore tinted goggles (stupidly as it was overcast) and had trouble siting the yellow finish buoy (against the yellow sand, it must be said).
What would you do differently?:

This was a decent swim, for me.
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Horrendous. I couldn't get the wetsuit off. I'm glad this is my last race in that wetsuit -- I'll get a new one next year. Good riddance to it...
Bike
  • 53m 6s
  • 21 miles
  • 23.73 mile/hr
Comments:

Not a bad ride considering lack of bike training. I went by Mike and Chuck early on, then we traded places for a while. I knew I needed to stay close to Chuck to have a chance to beat him.
What would you do differently?:

Concentration slipped a bit. Also, I'm not sure whether it was a good idea to let Chuck go on the last mile or not. Letting Mike go was OK -- I knew I'd catch him on the run. Chuck -- letting him go was a dicey decision.
Transition 2
  • 00m 33s
Comments:

That's better. Only issue was that my shoe slapped the ground and popped out right after I dismounted and I had to run back to get it. But this delay added to the bike time, not T2.
Run
  • 24m 14s
  • 4.35 miles
  • 05m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt pretty good. The problem in my upper right hamstring was making itself heard (not as much as it is right now though...), but it really didn't affect my running. I passed Mike within a few hundred meters. Chuck took longer. When I was close enough to pass, I held back for about 30 second to 'rest' so I could go by quickly. I didn't want him grabbing on. I managed to get by and the elastic snapped pretty quickly. Still, he put up a good fight -- I edged him by just 21s in the end.

First time on the open master's podium, and I feel pretty good about that, especially in a race with a long swim.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of the local tri people were there (Nick, Jason, Brian, etc.) and I talked with them a bit. I met Jamie and Nate from the mentor group and talked with them a bit, which was nice. They both had good races.

Event comments:

I liked this race a lot. Of course, the longer swim makes it very challenging for folks like me (and what I mean by `folks like me' is `folks who cannot swim') to make headway against the fast swimmers. I lost 5 minutes (ouch!) on the swim to the #1 open master's guy (and nearly 3 minutes to #2). We were otherwise quite even. So, right now the difference between the top and me is swimming. I can't hide from that reality.
