Swim
Comments: First OWS triathlon. The swim quickly turned into a survival game. I didn't fully panic, but I had a huge problem with keeping my face in the water. Had to battle waves out to the turn-around bouy. The way back was a bit easier. I felt a little more at ease plus waves were going with me, instead against me like the way out. Surprised the swim time turned out as well as it did given my that my technique flew out the window early into the swim. What would you do differently?: Need to practice OWS a lot! Transition 1
Comments: T1 was slow, but felt somewhat disoriented coming out of the water. What would you do differently?: Under the conditions I wouldn't do anything different. Would like to have a faster T1 time, but needed to settle down a bit after the swim. Bike
Comments: As anticipated, the bike leg was my most comfortable part of the race. Pushed hard and felt good. I did have to make a port-a-potty stop, but only cost me about 1 minute. I took some gel about 15 minutes into the ride and another towards the end. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 2
Comments: Felt good coming into T2. Racked bike, but on race belt, switched shoes, and took off What would you do differently?: Could have been a bit quicker, but overall wasn't too bad. Run
Comments: Walked most of the "killer" hill and the hill behind the observatory. The run portion of the race was very difficult for me. I didn't feel like I could push any harder. Although my legs didn't feel fatigued. I wasn't wearing my HRM, but felt maxed out the entire run. What would you do differently?: I worked on hills quite a bit during training, but still didn't feel prepared for this course. Legs felt good after the transition, but more brick training wouldn't hurt. Post race
Event comments: Overall, very pleased with my time. Definitely feel like I could have performed better in the swim and the bike under less windy conditions. Was given the wrong number, so my results are credited another "Patrick Allen" Apparently, 2 "Patrick Allens" were racing the Olympic distance and I was wearing the other guy's number. Have a call into the RD to get it straightened out, but have not heard back yet. Hopefully this will not be a huge problem to get resolved. Until its squared away, I won't know my AG standings, as the other guy was in a different AG. Last updated: 2006-06-11 12:00 AM

Woke up around 4 am. Ate a bowl of cereal with yogurt and drank a glass of water.
Got to the transition area at 5 am and setup my area. Walked around a bit to keep from getting too nervous. It was fairly chilly and windy, put on wetsuit to keep warm.
Got in the water, which was way warmer then the air. Swam out a little and back a few times to warm up and to get comfortable with the choppy conditions. Very choppy with actual white caps in the lake.
