Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4am.... ugh that sucked. Grabbed some Cream of Wheat (POWER!), and picked up my gf in one arm and the bike in the other, lol not really but she was basically a zombie. The drive to Destin was dark and uneventful.
Event warmup:

After setting up my transition I headed down to the beach with Molly. The sand was SO COLD! However the water was a nice 81 degrees. I got in about 10 minutes before race start (we were heat 1) and swam out to the buoy and back, the stroke felt good. The water was super smooth, and so clear! Destin's beaches are, in my opinion, the most beautiful in Florida.

Nice swim, the start seemed less crowded than at Santa Rosa. Never got kicked or punched this time either! I came out of the water in the top 4, around 40 or so in the first wave.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster, just need to work at it!

Long run up the beach and up boardwalk steps and across a parking lot to the transition area. Super fast transition! No socks, no jersey. Just ditch the swim stuff, throw on shades and helmet, and off I went. Smokin'

Wow what a bike leg! I went out hard, and just kept hammering. The course was advertised at 10, but it was only 9.5. Thus my one hang-up.

The race itself was unreal though, I only passed 1 and got passed by 3. However it was wicked fast. The guys who passed me actually helped me go fasted because it motivated me to kick it up a few knotches.
What would you do differently?:

I guess I could bike the course beforehand.

All of a sudden I make a turn, and THERE IS TRANSITION.... "damn!" I expected it to be a half mile ahead. Thus I didnt have time to undo the shoes and I had to run through transition clunking away in my bike shoes, then take them off at my spot. Way slow compared to a rolling dismount out of shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Just one of those things, next time know the course better

Good run. But not good enough lol. About a mile in I got passed by the #1 huy in my age group and just never caught back up. He beat me by 22 seconds. This one guy ran by going the other way and yelled " Come on man, go catch em'" I think I just grunted lol. I was puffing pretty hard.
What would you do differently?:

Work on pushing harder, condition!
Post race
Warm down:

Hugged Molly and walked around while sipping some water. Grabbed some red beans and rice, laid on the beach, and got a free massage! At the awards ceremony I got my first hardware, a wooden plaque for my 2nd place age group finish!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just need more races, I had so much fun!

Event comments:

Fun race in beautiful Destin, FL. The race was a little disorganized. Late start, my gf said they barely got the finish line up before the fastest guys came in lol. But overall I had an awesome time!
