Marine Corps Marathon
76F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 52m 18s
Overall Rank = 358/423
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 29/30
Pre-race routine:

Cup of coffee and some water, loaded up and headed to base which is only about 15 min away. Always like to get there early to recon the area and set up without rushing
Event warmup:

did some stretching and loosen up the arms and legs
Swim
  • 20m 43s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 46s / 100 meters
Comments:

since this was the first attempt with an open water swim at this event, I am hoping they get their act together and make sure the course is in water deep enough to swim. Don't think the ability to walk to the turn around bouy is fair or competitive
What would you do differently?:

Need more open water swim practice
Transition 1
  • 02m 45s
Comments:

Used tri suit for first time and made a big difference. Of course I didn't have to deal with wet suit :) Even had time to whip the grass and sand from my feet with a towel before putting on socks.
Bike
  • 49m 26s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 15.17 mile/hr
Comments:

had a good t-1 time as I didn't need to deal with a suit or putting on a top (used a tri suit) Made sure before my bike was in an easy gear to get started mount point was nice and flat and a small incline helped get up to speed quickly. Overall a good course with some challenging hills. Only con was the number of pot holes and rough road as well as the traffic you had to compete with. Best PR on the bike in time and speed (15.09mph)
What would you do differently?:

Need to get a faster cadence
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

quick change of shoes and patella band, grab visor race belt and I'm on my way.
Run
  • 38m 5s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 37s  min/km
What would you do differently?:

Need to really work on my run. I think I could be a lot more competitive if only I can get my run down to a respectable time
Post race
Warm down:

Great set up for finish, had everything there for you, grabbed water, sports drink and banana and cooled down walking to transition area to get bike and gear

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm happy with both swim and bike, run time really kills me.

Event comments:

Very well organized and run. Tons of volunteers and everyone was fantastic. Would like to see them figure out a better run and swim course. I'll be back next year.

Course: Course paralleled the shore which was a mistake. midway through the outward leg my hands started to hit bottom which surprised me and I stood up to find I was waist deep, looking around a lot of people were actually walking I had to walk out to deeper water to swim again. same thing on the turn toward shore. Not sure why it wasn't an out and pack course, they had plenty of support. could have been a very nice swim, but being in the muck turned up by everyone walking was really bad.
