Pre-race routine:

My alarm went off at 5:30. I ate an uncrustable and drank some Gatorade before I noticed that another clock said 1:30. I went upstairs to check and, sure enough, it was 1:30. NOT the best start to the day. I got up again at 5:30, relaxed a bit, and then drove to the race site.

Event warmup:

Walked around a bit.
Swim
  • 17m 13s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 18s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was in the second wave, right after the elites. I tried to start out a little closer to the front than I had before. About 100 meters into the swim I got kicked in the face. Hard. I was a bit dazed but felt a little better after side-stroking for a minute. My goggles lost their seal on both sides and I couldn't fix them so I swam the rest of the way with water in my googles. I did pass some people in the last 100 meters.

What would you do differently?:

Start at the front and push harder. Swim more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

I had some difficulty with my socks and shirt. I really need to get a tri top that fits and to get used to riding/running in bare feet.
What would you do differently?:

Wear a tri-top
Bike
  • 54m 48s
  • 15.5 miles
  • 16.97 mile/hr
Comments:

I made it a few miles before I started to get passed by people but even then there weren't large masses of people passing me like usual. I spent most of the second half of the route chasing down a clyde. I passed him with about a mile to go and smoked him on the run. As I came in a guy said that I was the third clyde off the bike. I was surprised by my time. I really felt that I had been faster.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

A little better
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 28m 18s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

This is always my most difficult discipline and it was no different today. Right out of transition I was getting passed by a bunch of people. I walked up the tougher hills and "ran" the rest. The results were surprising in a good way. I beat my previous best sprint run time by over 2 minutes. I guess I should have gone harder on the bike...
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with the family

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Issues with transition. Lack of training.

Event comments:

I was very happy with this race overall. I did a much better job than normal with hydration and my results were good. The race was very well put on and my family had a great time.
