Pre-race routine:

Up at 5am, organized my stuff, ate a cliff bar and headed to the venue.
Event warmup:

Set up my T and went to the lake to get used to the water. It was sub 60 degrees at 5am, but the water temp was a nice 70.
Swim
  • 35m 9s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

The lake had the color of very dark iced tea...brown and you could not see your hand extended from you. The one thing I notice about my OWS performance compared to training in the pool is that I do not kick very often in OWS. I think doing 1.5K of just pulling cost me about 5 total mins.
What would you do differently?:

Kick
Transition 1
  • 04m 12s
Comments:

Looooooooooooong friggin run to transition from swim exit. Jesus, can't RD's figure out a way to set up near the swim exit? Same issue at Miami Man and all of the Key Biscayne races. Wassup wit dat? Oh, and my damn wetsuit got caught on my timing chip. Good thing I didn't have a pocket knife with me or my Quintana Roo would have been minus the left leg.
What would you do differently?:

Find a stripper, then find a wetsuit stripper.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 35s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.47 mile/hr
Comments:

PR for bike leg! I'm surprised because my legs felt a little heavy and I could feel my mph drop during the "into the wind" sections of the course. It was a beautiful morning and very few cars on the road. A great course to ride. Was happy that I clicked into pedals pretty quickly since I've only had clipless pedals for about a week. Took in about 3 gels during the ride because I felt my energy lag a few times. In fact, I ate alot more gels this race than previous OLY.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time with stripper after swim. :)
Transition 2
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Got to T and sucked down a Gatorade and another gel. Threw on shoes and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

Refer to previous "what would you do diferently".
Run
  • 54m 42s
  • 5.5 miles
  • 09m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING!!! Sub 10 min. avg mile? Holy sh*t, that's a HUGE PR for me considering I barely broke 13 min. avg at Miami Man and could only complete the first 2.5 miles at Miami Man before going Galloway. Today, continuous running. 4 months of hard training and look what happens. Took in 3 gels and stopped twice for 20 seconds to drink some G.
What would you do differently?:

Are you kidding? Nothing!
Post race
Warm down:

Can you believe they did not have water at the finish line? Damn. I had to go back to T to get a drink. Weak.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being 250lbs.

Event comments:

It was a beautiful course, despite the dark brown lake. The bike and run were awesome. There were plenty of volunteers and the course was very well marked. A few things I did not like: no aid stations on the bike leg, no water at the finish, no massage tent, weak goodie bag. I guess I'm spoiled with the Miami RD's who do it up even for the sprints. My peformance kicked ass. I PRed my bike and run leg. Can't believe I broke 10 for the run avg. I have not even done that on a stand alone run training day. Improved my time over the Miami Man OLY 4 months ago by well over 20 mins.. I missed the podium for my AG by ONE. I finished 4th (podium for only top 3). However, they had only 1 Clyde division; 200 lbs. ages 0-99. Wow, one Clyde division. Our Miami races have 8 Clyde divisions. Anyway, the 3 guys on the podium today were 201, 205 & 215...then me at 250. I'll take it.
