Swim
Comments: water was verrry cold, but once you got ~200 meters in it got comfortable. the water was very smooth and not many people in each wave, so other than the cold it was an ideal swim. i couldn't feel my feet and my hands were just blocks so you couldn't control your fingers, but it was more strange than uncomfortable. What would you do differently?: i couldn't find anyone my speed to draft off of. i probably should have started closer up front, even though they are all faster than me, i would have been able to hang for a little while. Transition 1
Comments: i put on 2 thin long sleeve shirts for the bike. this was a very slow transition. nothing in particular, i just couldn't get myself in a hurry. What would you do differently?: i guess hurry more if i really cared. Bike
Comments: felt good to start. was trying to maintain a steady hr and was able to keep pace above 19mph for the first lap. saw ron towards the end of the lap and then laura passed me halfway through the second lap and looked awesome. i still felt ok, but as i got to around mile 40, i hit the wall pretty hard. the road was bad on that section, and the uphills and a slight headwind finally had my legs feeling really tired. fenty and his security escort in a black suv passed me and i started limping home. i was sticking to my race plan of a gu every 26minutes and water and 2 bottles gu20 for hydration. it worked well, but one slip is that i counted wrong and ran out of gu 30 minutes early. it was after i hit the wall though, so i can't blame it on that. What would you do differently?: bring 1 more gu. other than that, it went as planned. since it was a "C" training race, i wasn't trained or tapered to do any better than that. Transition 2
Comments: a little better than t1. took time to put on a lot of sun tan lotion, but i did hurry as i was excited to get out there and see my friends. i hadn't seen k or tim all day and i hoped to catch laura and run a little with her. she had a great bike and i was looking forward to seeing how well she was running. What would you do differently?: nothing. Run
Comments: i love starting triathlon runs. only one event left and it's just you and the course. no more thoughts of flats or drafting or any other problems. i took off and felt tired, but ok. i stopped for the bathroom and ate a gu in the first mile, and then settled in. after a mile, i could tell that it was going to be a hard run. i had to really concentrate to keep any sort of form, and it was heating up fast. i had no real goals, so the only thing keeping me going was the thought of seeing my friends and then getting back into the lake. shelly123 recognized me from bt and said hello. she looked like she was doing well and it was cool to met her. i saw k coming in on the bike after a good ride (always a nice sight) and then caught laura ~mile 5 after the turn around. she was doing great and on her way to another podium finish. we ran together briefly, but she started to worry about her HR getting too high so i went on ahead. i started the second lap and saw tim looking a little rough in that heat, but on his way to a great finish and still in good spirits. i finally caught k and walked with her for a bit to chat. we saw fenty on the run with no escort this time and k, feisty as ever, yelled at him: "where are your guys?!?!" i ran on and was ready to see the finish line. i caught ron who was having head and stomach problems and was ready for the finish line after one run lap. i walked and chatted with him a little, but a guy passing us with an imcda hat told me that if i was an ironman i wasn't allowed to walk with just over a mile to go. i sarcastically yelled to him "i'm talking here! don't worry, i'll catch you!" i started jogging again and talked to him a little once i did catch him. he turned out to be a nice guy training for imfl with great things to say about imcda. i sprinted the finish (like always) and got in the lake i was dreaming about. it was good to be over. What would you do differently?: nothing. happy with how it went. Post race
Warm down: stood in the cold lake and chatted with tim, laura, and tim's family. What limited your ability to perform faster: i ran the boston marathon 5 days before, so i wasn't exactly tapered. i knew i wasn't going to pr and the distances had all been messed with so i wasn't racing. it was just a training day that i could push at times and get a feel for what kind of shape i was in. i was happy with my times considering it's april and i was still recovering from the marathon. Event comments: pros: awesome lake and location for a race very organized reasonably priced cons: date is early so hard to train for and chance of bad weather/cold lake post race food was pathetic hotels/rest. are far Last updated: 2007-02-22 12:00 AM

stayed at hampton inn with k, tim, and laura (love that place). ron was at another hotel, so we met him there. i had english muffin with pb and then we drove ~30 minutes to race. setup up transition area and put on 2 wetsuits. yup, 2. the water was 53 degrees, so i put on a thin full wetsuit i use for scuba diving and then my farmer john tri suit over that. then i put on 2 swim caps and a neoprene hood.
with all the stuff on, the only problem was my hands, feet, and face. to try to get used to the water, i would swim 50 yards and then jog a little on the beach to warm up. the race was delayed until an ambulance got there, but i was doing ok keeping warm. i got to chat with ernie (ejc999) and watch adrian fenty (mayor of d.c.) get ready while his body guards watched over him.
finally it was time. i kissed k, walked over to my wave and hit the water running.
