Pre-race routine:

I got up early 4:30 AM and took a shower and ate a bowl of Honey Nut Cherrios. We drove over to Staten Island since Anica was a volunteer at the start. After dropping her off, I found a side street to park on and took a nap along with 2 other GFA's. At approximately 7:30 AM, I was done and wanted to get to the corral. I also had to use the restroom. We walked over to the Coral and hung out with Amy Shay in her corral. I ate my Power Bar and drank some water while waiting for the start. I'm so glad we had the car because it was cold on the island. As it got closer to show time it was time for me to make it to my coral. This is were I met up with BJ (pacer). I also realized my trusty Garmin 305 was dead so I had to use my Ironman watch (lap function) without the Heart rate monitor band. I turned in my personal gear bag and we hung out checking out the weird people and watching how people just got down to their underwears while changing.
Event warmup:

If you call standing around for over 37 minutes for you to even move a warm-up, then that was it. I also had to Ninja myself into an earlier wave because according to BJ, I pissed off the race director so they put me in a wave way in the back.

Mile 1 - 6
We finally crossed over the urine covered Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and headed into Brooklyn. I felt good along the way, the plan was to run 9 minute miles for as long as the legs would allow. This was the plan I selected on Race Day. It was very crowed but we kept a good pace. I did a lot of weaving through traffic to make get by slower runners. This obviuosly wasted some energy and made the run longer. I reached the 10K mark at 55:45.

Mile 6 - 12
We were still moving along at a very good pace. At times BJ would tell me to slow down because I would pick up my pace after passing people. He made me aware of trying to keep a steady pace. This was hard without my Garmin 305 since I couldn't actually watch my current pace. I only knew how fast I was going until I reached the next mile marker and hit the lap function. None the less, I hit the 20K mark at 1:54:04. I was still feeling good.

Miles 13 - 18
Wow, this is were things started to change a little. As we reached the 13.2 mark at 2:00:48, I thought can I do this again or even faster. I had doubt but i moved on forward as a good Marine would do. I also had thoughts that BJ would turning into Drill Instructor Martin short but fucking mean. Just start yelling the rest of the way!! Once we started th climb over the Queensboro Bridge, I could feel the legs getting tired. On the other side of the bridge is the 16 mile marker and you only have 10 mile left and you start the single digit count down. It took me 10:56 to run mile 16 so things were starting to slow down. We then made a change and starting shooting for gaol number 2 - 4:15 or better. At mile 17, BJ suggest the "Find the Stripper chick in the crowd game" I wasn't really trying to play since I had other issues going on. I was cramping and had to use my endrolyte pills at different segments of the run.

Mile 19 - 25
this was my slowest segment of the entire marathon. I was struggling but I was determined to run better than last year and walking up Fifth Avenue wasn't an option, I was going to run. I had to take breaks on the water stops instead of running and grabbing. The water stops seemed longer but they were needed rest. Somewhere around Mile 22 is where I finally find a really bonafide working girl and I let BJ know this. Of course he agrees with my selection, although I was checking out his previous seletions just not making comments. We also change the goal #3 - 4:30 or better. The climb up 5th Avenue was sweet because I didn't walk it like last year. It was faster than last year but what can I say "next year will be faster and lighter". After the 23 mile marker is were things get tougher (uphill). I then entered Central Park with a smile on my face as opposed to last year. I also acquired a case of terrets shortly afterwards. I mean I was cursing all kinds of words 4 letters adjectives because cardio, I was fine but not leg wise. This is were BJ brought me back to reality and talked about our USMC tattoos and perhaps I might want to turn it down.

Mile 25 - 26.2
This is were ING tricks you. They change the method of marking the final mile. But I know I was close to my goal so I moved on although it was tough I made it happen. I crossed the finish at 4:31:49 just short of my goal but that's okay. I made over an hour improvement from last year. Hopefully, I'll get in next year.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure you charge your Garmin the night before!!!!
More hill training during the fall season, I train mainly for Chicago thinking I might get into New York. Next year is my IM year, but I still need more hill training. I might incorporate hill repeats into my training next year.
Post race
Warm down:

This is what sucks about New Yorks finish. They funnel you into a narrow street for you finisher medal, chip removal, and your post race snack. Then it's a long walk almost a mile on your way to get your bag. Then you get out of the park and meet your family at your prespective letter. Of course, I had cash in the bag for the ever so longed street hot dog. I had 2 hotdogs and some water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was happy with my performance. Maybe start farther ahead to prevent so much zig-zagging but only time will tell.

I will do this race again if I get in next year.

Course: Five Boroughs and Five bridges make up this marathon. You start on Staten Island and cross over the Verazano-Narrows bridge, then you run into Brooklyn, over the Pulaski bridge, into Queens, over the Queensboro bridge, into Manhattan, over the Willis Avenue bridge, into The Bronx, over the Madison Avenue bridge, back into Manhattan and finish in Central Park. It's a hilly course with lots of support along the way. The course unites dozens of culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhoods, passing over five bridges, and finishing up at Tavern on the Green in world-famous Central Park.
