Age Group Rank = 4/73
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4 to load the car and make english muffin for breakfast.
Despite hours of drinking rum and cokes, Brad and Mike got up with little sleep to jockstrap for me, Karen and Julie.
In the car and driving to the race site by 4:45.
We got to Sandy Hook by 5:15ish, but had to sit in one laned traffic as people slowly parked.
Pumped the tires at the car and walked to TA. They moved the TA this year so there wasn't a long line checking your name off the athlete list (a necessity since it's on naval grounds).
Event warmup:

This year, the moved TA and also had groups of racks broken up by letters. The racks didn't have bib number ranges on them. Weird, but worked out for the three of us as we lined up right next to eachother and right near the bike out.
Set up TA, hit the port-o-potties, took some photos and walked to the swim start.
I was in wave #13 so I had about 45 minutes to wait after the actual race start.
No real warm up besides wiggling into my wetsuit.
Swim
  • 11m 31s
  • 805 meters
  • 01m 26s / 100 meters
Comments:

Quite possibly my best race swim ever.
I couldn't get right on the start line, but positioned myself in a good spot in the 2nd row. As the gun went off, I caught the feet of the fast woman right in front of me and drafted off of her for the first 100 yards or so. She started to veer left and I kept straight towards the bouy. My navigation was spot on and I was pushing it the entire way. I caught swimmers in the 3 waves in front of me. The water was a little wavy leading to a little bit of motion sickness. Rounded the bouy and kept the woman leading our wave with a yellow cap in sight. Pushed it hard on the way back and again had perfect navigation. Stood up when I was in shallow water and immediately started running up the sandy hill.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at all.
Near perfect swim.
Transition 1
  • 03m 46s
Comments:

T1 includes about 1/4 mile run from the beach to the actual TA.
I got out of my wetsuit before the run since I thought it may be easier to do with water still in it. Had no issues getting it off.
Ran entire distance to TA and heard Brad yelling.
Had socks rolled so all I had to do was roll them on.
It was my first time with my new aero helmet and didn't have any issues.
Actually saw Karen in T1 who was in the wave in front of me. She laughed about me catching her, but she beat me out of T1.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 29m 32s
  • 11 miles
  • 22.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Got up to speed quickly on the bike. We had a headwind on the way out, but that meant a fast return trip. My stomach was a little upset, but I figured it was from the wavy swim.
I was only passed by 3 people the entire bike (some of which I am sure were in my AG). Hit the turn around and knew the "11 mile" bike would be short. Took a GU at the turn around and then hammered home.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder maybe? I honestly don't think I could have.
Kind of annoying, but the course said 11 miles...my bike computer had 9.3.
Transition 2
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Saw Karen again in T2 and said how I couldn't catch her.
We were racked close to the bike in as well which made for the quick T2.
Off with the helmet and bike shoes, on with the sneakers, race belt, and visor and I was off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 24m 50s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Again, this was short...my guess is 2.8 miles.
Started out with a not so settled stomach. Effort felt very labored and I was breathing really heavy. I caught Karen a few minutes in and we exchanged words of how much the race hurt.
I ran with my bottle which was nice since it was getting hot. I pushed the entire run and don't think I could have run any faster.
Saw Brad at the end of my first loop and he yelled some encouragement.
Nothing special about the 2nd loop besides seeing Karen on the small out and back.
Rounded the turn for the finish line and heard our group yelling.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I went as hard as I could go.
Post race
Warm down:

Waited for Karen to cross the finish line.
Found Brad, Mike and Julie and talked to everyone for a bit.
They ran out of water and only had oranges and bananas.
We packed up our stuff and loaded the car waiting for the results to get posted.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not really sure. I went all out the entire race and left it all out there.

Event comments:

Despite my issues with this race, I still enjoy doing it.
Cons: ran out of food, park is a debachle to get in and out of, transition area isn't set up correctly, wacky racking system (but worked out for us), long, rocky run from swim exit to TA, short course versus what was advertised
Pros: local beach race I can do with my sister, a fun race I can actually race

Despite the cons, I'll still continue to do this race. It's a fun one and a good chance to push it to see what you can do.
Plus I have some unfinished business in 2009. Goal of top 3 in AG next year.
