Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3 am starving - ate some almonds. Went back to sleep, woke up late (slept through alarm?), went to site, set up, had one hammer gel with some water and some other fluids
Event warmup:

A little swimming, but not much
Swim
  • 12m 53s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

very rough getting out - had the hardest time with that. Also had trouble staying focused - I was doing too much sighting, and swim was crowded
What would you do differently?:

More open water swims - keep my head down and stay focused. I also lost a lot of time walking fast (rather than running) to the transition area - I got out of the water ahead of a lot of people but they passed me on the run into transition from the beach
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

Felt really quick.
Bike
  • 34m 34s
  • 10.5 miles
  • 18.23 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt pretty good. I was unfamiliar with this course (changed since last time I did this race). I thought there would be wind from the north on the trip back, so I held back a little bit. Had a hard time keeping HR down. Didn't feel like I was going as fast as I was pushing it based on RPE
What would you do differently?:

Must. Ride. More.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Got my shoes on, then ran while putting on my Garmin, number belt, and hat.
Run
  • 29m 35s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt really good, but HR kept beeping. One guy I know said it looked like I was having a good run. Felt pretty good for not having done much speed work lately. Thank you weather gods for the clouds!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, stretched, drank sports drink and water, ate half a BBQ sandwich (! - I've never done this at a race before but it smelled really good and I had to have some, even though it was 8:30 a.m.)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim - getting out in waves. Running into T1 on sand.
Bike - I need to start working on this. It's kind of frustrating, even though it wasn't as bad as the swim today.

Event comments:

This is an awesome race - I wish I had done the other two in the series this year!
