Swim
Comments: The swim was in the bay and we entered on the boat launch ramp at South Shores Park. They put down a covering over the ramp where we entered and exited the water, but it was very thin and the ridges on the launch ramp were still a little tender on the feet. The water was cold for the first minute or two but I warmed up quickly when I started swimming. There was plenty of room to spread out so it wasn't crowded and I didn't feel like anyone was trying to swim over top of me. That was great. In my last race, the swim space was very narrow so it was difficult. I think I did pretty good on the swim. The swim time also includes time out of the water and the walk/run up to enter the transition area. So, I was pleased with my time. What would you do differently?: Still need to learn how to swim freestyle instead of doing backstroke. That causes me to get off course a bit and I have to stop and check my direction frequently. Transition 1
Comments: In my last race, my transition time was 15 minutes. So, I was consciously trying to go faster this time. I took the time to have a little gatorade, some water and to eat about 1/2 an apple. I was feeling a bit hungry before the race started so by the time I finished the swim, I definitely knew I needed something. What would you do differently?: Keep working on being quicker. Bike
Comments: Slow and steady finishes the race. I would like to have been faster but I wasn't. I just kept going. My bike is geared kind of low. I may need to look into getting it geared differently. However, the bike ride was really cool. It was very pretty around the bay and there were a lot of guys out surfing using giants kites. They were so pretty. I was the last bike finisher and for the last mile and a half the motorcycle cop bringing up the rear rode next to me and we talked. What would you do differently?: Work out more. Transition 2
Comments: I tried to go quickly. Just over three minutes was pretty good for me. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: I knew I was the last one out on the run and I haven't ran for a while so I was thinking "Oh my gosh, how am I going to finish this??" I really didn't know how but I just kept putting one foot in front of the other. I ran or jogged for maybe 2/3rds of the course but I did have to walk a bit. I actually passed one other racer about half way through the run so I knew I wasn't last. I think I finished about 5 minutes before her. What would you do differently?: Run More. Post race
Warm down: Walked around a bit. Drank some water. Ate 1/2 of a cliff bar after about 10 minutes. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of recent training. I only trained twice in the last two months. Event comments: There were no water stations on the bike course and only one on the run course. Since the run was a 2 loop circle, I passed the water station twice. I had brought a good sized water bottle with me, which was low by the time I hit the water station the second time so I filled it up. It worked out O.K. After the race they had a lot of raffle prizes. The raffle prizes were awarded based on random race numbers and you had to be there to claim the prize. Unfortunately, they started early so many of the prizes were already given out by the time I got to the finish line so I don't know if I might have won something if I was there earlier. I was disappointed that they started giving prizes before all the competitors had finished racing, but I must say, it was cool that they had prizes to begin with. I really loved this race and the venue and I definitely want to do it again next year. Last updated: 2008-06-29 12:00 AM

I got up at 4:20 a.m., showered, made some hot tea, ate a banana and a hard boiled egg. I had about a 5-10 minute drive to the race venue. Transition opened at 5:30 a.m. and I arrived at exactly that time. I unloaded my stuff and set up my transition. Transition closed and everyone had to be out at 6:45 a.m. The race started at 7:00 a.m.
I didn't really do anything to warm up.
