Swim
Comments: Hadn't swam in nearly 4 months so I'm pretty pleased. I lined up at the front/outside of the pack. I drafted for at least the first 1/4 of the swim which was a first for me, I think it went pretty well until I had to swim around another competitor and lost my lead. I enjoyed the flat water of the bay better than the shore start in the surf. What would you do differently?: Train - and maybe try some anti-fog solution for my goggles - I had to clear them twice. Transition 1
Comments: I am so slow here - I need proper tri gear to speed things up and improve. What would you do differently?: practice, practice, practice... Better gear Bike
Comments: I really suck at the bike... but in all honesty - this was my best race. According to this calculator my speed was 3+ mph better than other races. I need to get shoes and pedals. I actually passed a person or two which rarely happens for me. I am however pretty tired of losing so much ground on the bike - I came out of the water in 64th place over all and dropped to 397th after the bike - that's a big difference. I'm glad to see the improvement, but want to see more... What would you do differently?: get the right equipment and focus on the engine in my training. Transition 2
Comments: Took my helmet off too early, someone reminded me I could get DQ'd - so I put it back on. Thanks for the reminder! Run
Comments: REALLY BAD!!! I actually had to walk due to some side cramping. I never walk in races. I hit the wall HARD. I felt like I weighed a ton and was moving backwards for the first-half. Everything was bad. As I hit mile two I was feeling better and at about mile 2.5 I was starting to hit my stride. I need to figure out how to adjust to the run better (or run longer events so I have time to make up that awful start). What would you do differently?: Practice bricks - I need to get my body ready to run off the bike. Post race
Warm down: stretching and walking What limited your ability to perform faster: Training, Training, Training - I signed up for the race not really thinking about my time commitments and just didn't get a chance (or make the time) to train. Event comments: I think it was a great course, and the race had a good feeling for a great cause, but there were some logistical problems that mainly seemed to focus on the fact that a large number of the volunteers were junior high-aged kids with little or no supervision. I admire them for volunteering, but they needed a little more direction. Also some volunteers to help with the parking nightmare would have been good. Otherwise - It was a good race! Parking was a nightmare, once off the freeway - traffic stopped - it took 40+ minutes to actually park. Anyone doing this race in the future - prepare to get there extra early!!! Slept awful - no reason, just couldn't sleep. "Woke up" on time, got my toast (2 pcs. Eziekel cinnamon/rasin) and got dressed, we were out the door by 5:30 am. It took about 20 minutes to get to the race as was planned, but the parking problem left me with only about 15 minutes to rack and set up transition. It was stressful.
I managed to pile my wetsuit onto my sister as we made our way to the race - as I was setting up she had to remove our dog from all the commotion as she was in kill mode when any other dog walked by. So my warmup consisted of me frantically running around trying to find my wetsuit. Finally found her but due to all the problems - I couldn't get in the water nor really do anything else - so I stretched as I made my way down to the water - not exactly the way it was supposed to go.
