Age Group Rank = 24/79
Pre-race routine:

Woke 5:30, ate oatmeal, rode to race and set-up transition area
Event warmup:

Short swim
Swim
  • 19m 27s
  • 984 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

A little intimidated by M20-24 age group combined with my group in the swim wave. Treading water start gave me the opportunity to get the jitters out early. Started slowly, and built a steady pace. The current was unexpectedly challenging, but didn't panic. Swam pretty straight; all my sighting practice really paid off. Was extremely pleased with my swim performance relative to my fitness and skill level.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I did everything well, and swam to the best of my current ability. Plenty of room to improve with more training.
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

Pretty good. I was a little tipsy after the swim, as usual. Took my time, but didn't stand around. Need to work on getting out of my cheap wetsuit--I must look pretty funny wrestling that thing.
What would you do differently?:

More swim fitness will help me come out of the water a little stronger. Practice getting out of wetsuit.
Bike
  • 52m 19s
  • 14.91 miles
  • 17.10 mile/hr
Comments:

Held back a bit on the bike to save as much steam as I could for the run. Spun my wheels a bit at the start to get my land legs back after the swim. Took the first loop at about 70% and learned the course. Gave about 90% on the second lap, but pulled up to spin it out a bit over the last mile before dismounting. Ran a bit slow and wobbly into transition.
What would you do differently?:

Work on cornering
Transition 2
  • 02m 17s
What would you do differently?:

Get speed laces
Run
  • 30m 32s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, this is the tough part for me. I felt tired, but not completely wiped. I just can't seem to get my legs to turn over any faster.
What would you do differently?:

Time for speed training. I've come a long way in the run in terms of base fitness, but it is time to turn it up a bit.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor run fitness

Event comments:

I felt this was a very successful day for me. I was very pleased with my swim, perfectly satisfied with my bike, and predictably disappointed in my run. All-in-all, a great race for my current level. I am looking forward to racing more, and continuing to improve.
