Getting Enough Vitamins and Minerals

Although you can receive all of your vitamins and minerals through foods eaten in the diet, nutritional products used for training may not allow you to meet recommendations on a daily basis.

Member question:
I currently take no vitamins. I try to meet my nutritional requirements from foods. Is this a foolish mindset? Is there something I should be taking?

Answer:
In an ideal world, everyone would meet daily vitamins and mineral recommendations through food in their diet. But life is far from perfect! When we eat a breakfast bar in the car, down a protein shake after a workout and pop a frozen dinner in the microwave for a quick lunch, meeting daily recommendations is not always easy. Although you can receive all of your vitamins and minerals through foods eaten in the diet, nutritional products used for training may not allow you to meet recommendations on a daily basis. Given that we crave a fast recovery drink after a hard training session and want a quick fuel during a workout, there are certain times when we should eat the essential training foods (i.e. bars, gels, drinks) instead of eating whole foods (i.
