Run
Comments: Had a goal of under 50 minutes in the first run, so I went out harder than last year. Felt good. Very happy to hit my goal time. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Great run. Transition 1
Comments: Thought I might want leg or arm warmers and maybe gloves, but I decided against them. Took a few seconds deciding. What would you do differently?: Be certain what I would wear before T1. Bike
Comments: A little disappointing because I was about a minute slower than last year. I climbed well enough, but I think I hold back too much on the descents. There are some long fast descents on this course. The roads are a little curvy, and I'm a big chicken, so I get on the brakes too much. What would you do differently?: Let loose on the downhills a little. Transition 2
Comments: A little slow because I was catching my breath. Run
Comments: Had a goal of under an hour for the second run, so this run was good, too. Some of the climbs are so steep that it is like climbing stairs with roots and rocks for the steps. I knew I wouldn't be able to run the whole thing, so I tried to walk only on the steepest parts. It worked out well, and I passed several people on the run and finished strong. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: As soon as I stopped I started to get cold because it was still pretty cool and a little windy, so I put on some pants and long sleeves and headed for the food. Chili and beer!!!!! Perfect post race food on a beautiful, brisk Autumn day. Since I met all 3 of my goals I was very happy. Then I saw the results and found I was second in my AG. WOO-HOO!! My first hardware. OK, there were only 4 in my AG, but as I explained to my wife, this race is so hard that not many people have the nerve to sign up;) What limited your ability to perform faster: I'm slow, I don't train enough, and I'm a chicken on fast downhills on the bike. Event comments: One of the best races I have had the pleasure of doing. Last updated: 2009-08-10 12:00 AM

This race is pretty special for a couple of reasons. It takes place in the Shawangunk Mountains so it is extrremely hilly. That whole area around Mohonk and Lake Minnewaska is one of the prettiest parts of NY State. That, plus definitely the best post race food of any race I heve ever done.
I have to say that the people who do the long course (5,84,15, with 3 loops of the bike course, and 3 loops of the run course for the 2nd run), are incredible athletes. This year they added an intermediate race of 5, 55 and 10, but that is still a little beyond my ability.
I had my usual shake about 2 hours before the race. It's less than an hour drive from home which is nice. This is my 3rd year doing this race, and I had a goal of breaking 4 hours.
