Pre-race routine:

got up at 3:00am; quick shower to wake up for the long drive to Neenah, glass of water and some strawberries.
Event warmup:

Little tight after the 3 hr drive; arrived at 6:30, set up transition, walked run-in, bike-out, bike-in, run-out a few times, easy pace jog for a mile, couple of race pace accelerations. Went to start line.
Run
  • 12m 36s
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

mile 1: 06:01, slowed it down for mile 2, but probably too conservative...going off in wave 1 is always fun; some real rabbits in that group. Winner of race was on an 05:01 pace for the first two miles. Crazy fast.
What would you do differently?:

I think I slowed it down too much after mile 1. Looked at the Garmin at mile 1 marker and thought I should slow it down, even though I felt very good and not winded or over-exerting.
Transition 1
  • 00m 28s
Comments:

first in AG and 4th overall on this transition. Very happy with that. Little slow getting feet into shoes on the course. Seemed like my feet were swollen or something, hard to get them in even though I had used Body Glide to grease up a little bit.
What would you do differently?:

Need more Cossack drill practice. Was ok, but could have been better.
Bike
  • 50m 27s
  • 19.5 miles
  • 23.19 mile/hr
Comments:

Decent bike, although I was almost 40 seconds slower than last year. I don't think the wind gusts were the reason for the lost time. Last year I was in a racing duel with Lauren Jensen and 2 other fellas that kept me accellerating and resting at a quick pace through the entire course. This year I was almost completely on my own from the start and I did not have the adrenaline "bumps" that I had last year. I felt like I was going fast and I was pushing myself, but not as much as if I had rabbits to chase down. I got passed by one guy about 1 mile from the end, but I passed him in transition and didn't see him till after the race was over. Very happy that I had studied the course map well enough to know where the potential pitfalls were. Stayed on course the whole way (no detours like last year). Course was very well marked this year.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. Maybe stay at a consistenly quick pace, but interject some 10-second accelerations on 3 minute intervals? I really prefer to be able to see someone in front of me to chase down. Didn't have that in this race and let myself be too comfortable.
Transition 2
  • 00m 24s
Comments:

1st in AG, 5th overall in this transition. Very, very happy.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 13m 11s
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

way too comfortable; was passed by the women's eventual winner at mile 1. Could hear her gaining ground on me but couldn't keep up. Wanted to hang with her till the end and then make a run for it, but she was moving too fast.
What would you do differently?:

Felt very comfortable on the run which I take as a bad sign, tried to accelerate but feet wouldn't move any faster. Very strange feeling to be breathing comfortably, but not able to move faster. What's up with that? I guess I just need more running.
Post race
Warm down:

stretching, 2 scoops Recoverite. French toast and Gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I learned that I am much faster when I have someone to chase. I need to find ways of self-motivation when I am on my own on the race course. I lulled myself into thinking I was going fast, but in the end was significantly slower than last year in identical course conditions. Need to find a way to balance the pseudo-rabbit imagery with a non-blow-up pace. I will incorporate that into my training.

Event comments:

Every year this just gets better. First year I did this race, I swore I'd never do it again. Now I look forward to it as the beginning of every race season. The National Anthem was the best I've ever heard. She was fantastic. Got the race off to a great start. The only thing I missed this year was the multiple massage stations afterwards. They had one guy doing stretching and the line was too long to wait in. Last year they had 4 massage stations.
