Pre-race routine:

Pre race - registered for the race and got my race pack on friday afternoon and had a little wonder round the race event expo, was really jealous of all the speed machines being shown and how they were well out of my price range. Check the water temp and it was a balmy 25.7 celcius, was looking like a non wettie swim! :(

Saturday check the bike in early on at 10am. The event organisers were announcing that we should deflat our tyres on the bikes because it was hot out and they might explode. my valve managed to get stuck with the valve extenders so took the front wheel off and took it home. Gettng some funny looks as i think people thought i had stolen a front 808!

The day - woke up 4.45am - transition was open from 5am until 6.15./ The elites started at 6.30am my race didn;t start until 8.35. Ate a banana and two peices of toast with pb and honey, also a magnesium drink and a coffee to get things moving, also lots of water since it was already warm outside.

Down in transition got everything set up in a very tight space and walked the area. It was huge, and lots of fun going through it. with ramps over walkways etc...

after just watched the races go off until my start and watched the elites transition and finish before i had started lol
Event warmup:

Not much of a warm up, as so hot already a little strectching and trying to stay in the shade then a few 100m swim warm up before the gun.

Comments:

Swim was good, was praying all morning for half a degree drop for a wetsuit swim but unfortunately that didn;t happen. The wave start wasn;t too crowded with only 80 odd compettitors going off in my wave. Placed myself in the front middle section ready for the rough and tumble. I didnt get knockled about to much so was all good. The swim itself was fun, maintained a pretty constant pace and kept my breathing, current wasn;t too much of an issue, compared to a warm up swim a day before where we couldn;t stand into the current. I seemed to be swimming alone for quite a bit of time so perhaps need to work on drafting, but was more concentraing on swimming in the middle of the inlet with the current and near the bank for against the current. came out the water in 26 in my age group so pleased with that
What would you do differently?:

Draft more get my technique sorted with some master classes
Transition 1

Comments:

Need to get some shoes with a loop to tie to back and allowing quicker mounts dismounts
What would you do differently?:

nothing really

So the bike, -
My biking needs some improvement i think..... first things first i was riding blind with speed as i managed to put my wheel on with my sensor the wrong way round so had no idea of the bike leg speed just was going by the time! I actually quite enjoyed riding blind as wasn;t trying to maintain any kind of pace because i didn;t know it!
The course itself was good, on the way out there was a tailwind, and was cruising and not pushing to hard. Reached the garmin hill which i had cycled twice two days before, nothing to worry about maintained over 20k per hour over most of the hill. then hit the undualting road out to cooroy.. lots of people on the road and lots of drafting going on.... loved the downhill which is straight compared to the cornering up hill... the day before hit 87.2kmh which was my fastest ever, loved riding fast... hit the flats again into town and stuck into that headwind... again lots of people drafting, managed to stay in aero for most of the way

back into town the road is lined with spectators and really good buzz ridingfast and so close to them. also on the roads on the way out lots of messages written on the road - none for me unfortunately but nice readin the words of encouragement.
What would you do differently?:

i would like to go faster on the bike but that mean more saddle time and probably loosing some more weight!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

almost stacked into huge amount of spectators ha ha but recovered with no embarrasment.. quick transtions and out on the run
What would you do differently?:

learn to come out of shoes before transition
Run
  • 48m 16s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 50s  min/km
Comments:

The run was so much fun, in transition you had to run out and climba man made bridge over the swim exit and then onto the course proper. The road is lined with specatators and drinks stations and people just trying to keep you cool. Kids with buckets of water throwing them out you if you wanted and people with garden hoses spraying you as you ran past.

the run was good the wind had died down again. THe course had markers every 200m which was good to keep track of how far you had gone and how far to go. plenty of drinks stations too!

My run, really really pleased with it. My stand alone 10k was best at 46mins so to run 48mins after the bike well i was impressed with myself.... everyone had lettering on their calve for their age group so was really pleased when passing all the zz must have been about 14 in all in my age group.

loads of encouragement on course and great party carnival atmosphere

felt some twinges from cramp around 7k so slowed down a little and had a stretch then started picking it up again. Cramp never really materialised which was good!
What would you do differently?:

run harder from about 2-3k out from finish
Post race
Warm down:

just jumped into the showers made by the course people!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

sore throat and head before start

Event comments:

an amazing race, would recommend to anyone who is in australia. Get your name in the ballot for next year.

Party at the surf club after the event was great too!
