Pre-race routine:

Woke up before 5. Ate Grape Nuts at home and a Clif bar at the site. Once at site we mostly stood around and waited because of the rain and lighting. I was mentaly getting out of it because I was thinking too much about how disappointed I would be if we didn't get to do it. Finally we got word that we were going to start earlier than our 8:30 time.
Event warmup:

Swim about 200 yards just to feel the water and the exits up the ladders. I also went through my transitions and made sure I knew were to run and bike out.
Swim
  • 13m 21s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Strategically I was supposed to stay outside and to the back. Somehow I ended up smack in the middle. I started too strong and when I tried too taper that off I started getting beat up by all the other stronger swimmers. My heart rate skyrocketed and then I started to panic. I spent the rest of the swim trying calm myself down and catch my breath. I probably only "swam" 150 yards and treaded or backstroked 350 yards.
What would you do differently?:

Stay away from the group until I become better.
Transition 1
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

T1 went better than expected. As soon as I got out of the water my heart rate went down about 30 beats (and I was still running). I had trouble getting into my pedals. Probably just nervous.
Bike
  • 51m 26s
  • 18 miles
  • 21.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt really good and at home. got a little slower up the hills on the second lap but not bad. This was a pretty good ride and not a lot happened. On the bottom of my first hill there was this guy lying in a heap. Not what I wanted to see on my first race. Good nutrition. Took my electrolyte pills and gu without slowing down.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder on hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Good transition. It was good to see that there were not a ton of bikes on the racks. Shoes went on good. Grabbed race belt, hat, and watch.
Run
  • 27m 56s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt really slow. My legs felt kind of heavy. i know I can run better than that I am itching to show that. Turnaround was kind of weird just a sign that said sprint turnaround not even a volunteer there.
What would you do differently?:

Don't leave anything in the tank.
Post race
Warm down:

Spent time basking with my great friends that came out. Had a sports drink and a water. Ate a slice of pizza and a coke. Got a massage a few hours later and drank water through out the rest of the day.

Event comments:

Great experience for my first time. Has fueled me to want to do more. i will be back to do this next year.
