Swim
Comments: Focused on breathing (which was good), but then forgot about navigation. Settled down once I remembered to sight every 20 strokes, was best when sighting every 10 (I definitely drift away from my breathing side). Wasn't till the last half that my stroke started to smooth out a bit. Felt good and strong getting out of the water. What would you do differently?: Sight every 10-15 strokes, then remember to focus on long, smooth strokes. Oh yeah, start training to swim faster. Transition 1
Comments: Long run to the bike, had to dodge a lot of people lumbering along. Almost fell over trying to put on the bike shoes. Wasted time trying to put on the fleece pullover, then deciding halfway to not wear it, eating down a gel (Accelerade Kiwi-Strawberry). What would you do differently?: Ditch the fleece, practice stripping off the wetsuit and getting into the bike shoes, put the gel on the bike to eat on the road. Bike
Comments: Felt a little chilled at first in the wet tri top, but was fine after warming up (glad I decided to ditch the fleece). Pushed hard, breathing hard, but felt good passing everyone (except for people on "real" bikes), definitely more power with the bike shoes. Both my shins almost cramped up when my feet hit the ground! What would you do differently?: Surprised my AG performance was so weak, guess I need to log more miles on the bike, and start budgeting for a tri bike. Transition 2
Comments: Almost didn't clip out in time on the dismount. Grrr, someone left their wetsuit on the ground, couldn't get my seat underneath the bike rack tube. Basically had to jam it in there. Bike shoes off OK, running shoes on great. What would you do differently?: Start working on getting bike shoes off faster. Run
Comments: Smart move starting off easy, using my hip muscles. Legs felt strong within a mile, then it was just about getting enough breathing. Almost cramped my stomach after the first water stop, affected my breathing. Still, felt good passing everyone: did not get passed once. What would you do differently?: Ditch the water stops unless thirsty. Post race
Warm down: Walk around a bit, stretch (too little), eat LOTS of food (awesome Brunswick stew) What limited your ability to perform faster: Limited experience swimming, not enough time in the saddle, drinking while running. Event comments: Great race, beautiful view of the lake, a bit cramped on the starts and finishes for the bike and run sharing the same road. Awesome Brunswick Stew. Last updated: 2008-05-28 12:00 AM
