Pre-race routine:

This was my first tri. I woke up at 4:30AM after finally dozing off at about 3:30 AM, too wired to sleep. Drank muscle milk, rode my bike to the race site and checked in.
Event warmup:

rode my bike about 1 mile and swam a few strokes
Swim
  • 10m 41s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 08s / 100 meters
Comments:

This should actually be my strongest event. I've grown up doing swim team and have trained in the open water for several months. I have never swam in such a large group so I hung back and stayed to the outside.
What would you do differently?:

I would deffinately be more aggressive and go for the inside. I would make my way to at least the middle and not the back. I did fine passing people once I got out there.
Transition 1
  • 04m 34s
Comments:

Ha! Okay, here's where my "beginner" status is so obvious. I wanted to save time in the transition so I just wore my running shoes to ride! yes, I know about plantar fasciatis. I'm investing in several new things for the next tri!
What would you do differently?:

Get my butt in gear!
Bike
  • 1h 17m 47s
  • 17.6 miles
  • 13.58 mile/hr
Comments:

My sister and I did this together. When we began we did not want to invest in road bikes and decided to just put slick tires on our mountain bikes. Need I say more? People were flying past me without even pedaling! I never stopped. I averaged about 13 mph. My bike is so heavy that even a nice downhill doesn't give me enough push for the next uphill. It was extremely discouraging watching people put half as much effort into it and going twice as fast!
What would you do differently?:

I'm investing in a good road bike and shoes! Happy Birthday to me!
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Run
  • 39m 46s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 12m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm an average runner. If I hadn't had to work so hard on the mountain bike my run would have been so much better.
What would you do differently?:

run more
Post race
Warm down:

rode my bike a few miles and walked

What limited your ability to perform faster:

little experience and poor bike equipment

Event comments:

This was the best adrenaline rush I've ever experienced and I do it all over again even if it meant I had to ride that stupid mountain bike!
