Subject: Crappy Winter Weather Challenge 2015 - 2016
The Crappy Winter Weather Challenge starts today (November 1) and runs until the end of March 2016.

Here's a link to the scoring spreadsheet. Please let me know if you have trouble entering data or have any questions.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kBBhTK2OIvMWKFRCIoznji3-98r5...
Photos and stories of hardship and courage as you fearlessly tackle everything that winter can throw at you are of course encouraged.

The scoring rules have been handed down from antiquity and are as follows....

Wind factor
light winds from 5 - 10 mph 1 Point
medium winds 11 -19 mph 2 Points
20+ 4 Points

Temp factors
30-35 .5 points
25-29 1 Point
15-24 3 Points
1-14 5 Points
0 and below 8 Points

Precipitation
Drizzle/Light Snow 1 Point
Medium Rain/Snow 2 Points
Heavy Rain/Snow 3 Points

Bike Bonus - 1 point for outdoor ride sub 40 degrees

Polar Bear Challenge 5 Points

Suck-o-meter scoring

Time in minutes x (Temp mult+Wind mult+precip mult+ Bike Bonus)= Suckitude score

Scoring starts with temperature - if your event does not gain you temperature points you get no points for the event Bike gets you points at 39 degrees or less and all other activities get you points at 35 or less. Once you get temperature points you can add the other factors in to get your point total for that activity. Minimum of 20 minutes for an event to count.

Happy a Craptastic Winter everyone and be safe!!!

I went for an 87 minute run this morning and the temperature on the thermometer outside my window showed -2 Celsius when I started. So I figured I'd get some points. However it warmed up quite a bit during the run and Garmin Connect shows the temperature for my run as +3 Celsius, which is too warm for running points. If I'd gone mountain biking instead of running the bike bonus would kick in and I'd have my first points.

I guess I'll have to wait for my bike commute to work tomorrow morning for my first points.

Ran a marathon yesterday in Milwaukee WI, temp was in the mid 50's.
Supposed to be a mild start to November, so here is a chance for everyone to get a head start on me.

Good to have you back for another year of crapitude. Based on your record in previous years the rest of us will need a head start if we hope to stay anywhere near your score.

Not many entries so far - and even fewer points. I suspect it may still be a little early for crappy weather in many parts of North America. But not in Calgary - we had some great crappy weather this past week.

Here are the conversion factors for the few countries that don't use the British system.

More than 31 km/h 4 Points

Temp factors
- 1 to + 2 .5 points
- 4 to - 2 1 Point
- 9 to - 5 3 Points
- 17 to - 10 5 Points
below - 17 8 Points

Hi b2run
Glad to have you back and it's good to see someone else with some points.

Let's not forget that anything below 4 Celsius (actually closer to 4.4) gets the bike bonus.

The rules as stated are actually not very precise. Ideally they should be stated in language like "less than or equal to"
For example - should 24.5 Fahrenheit be 1 point or 3 points? I started to rewrite the rules but it made my head hurt so I decided that they've been handed down from antiquity and they've worked for years so I might as well leave them alone.

If you use the "Points Calculator" and "Metric Calculator" tabs you don't even need to know the scoring rules. Just enter the temperature and other data - the spreadsheet calculates everything for you. There are IF statements that ensure you won't get points if you don't qualify. I used it all last year so it is well tested. Look in the yellow section of the Metric Calculator for an example of my scoring for the past week. Admittedly the "Points Calculator" tab (which is non-metric) is not very well tested so if anyone has problems or doubts about it please let me know.

Garmin Connect shows weather data which also helps a lot. By using the calculator and Garmin Connect I find I have to do a lot less bookkeeping than I did a couple of years ago.

Wish I'd known about this thread last year. I did some long snowy runs to prep for my marathon.  This year I'm training for my first ultra so I will be collecting points

You found us this year - better late than never. Welcome to the Crappy Winter Weather challenge.

I warn you that this challenge can twist your thinking. I recently looked out the window at work and saw that it was snowing. Instead of thinking "Oh crap my bike ride home will be miserable" I thought "Good it's snowing, I hope it's cold out"

Yes, we had an incredibly warm fall so far. We broke a number of record highs. It's suppose to be back close to normal by the weekend. I only run two days a week but the weather can be pretty bad here so I rack up some pretty good points. Thanks for the calculator tip. I'll have to try that.

It does lack a bit in the precise department but I don't notice. I just use it as a motivator to get out. There are no cash prizes after all.

Ok so according to the formula:

Time in minutes x (Temp mult+Wind mult+precip mult+ Bike Bonus)= Suckitude score

today was:

140 x (0.5 + 2 + 2) = 630

Is there a category for number of snot rockets that need to be blown? Because I'd beat all of you. I need to run with a friggin nose plug

That sounds like pretty crappy weather - rain or snow?

Do I get to decide because I started the thread? If you run barefoot when it's below 35 Fahrenheit it's okay with me if you claim a one point per minute bonus. But you need to have a note from your mother saying she's okay with it. In fact if your mother writes you a note and you scan it and post it, I think you should get a 300 point bonus.

Kidding about the barefoot points, I just thought it funny that the run qualifies but I did part of it without shoes. Looking at the spreadsheet I see that my southwest desert winter won't have much of a chance so I'll have to make it up in minutes

I'm not going to be competitive at this, but it's still going to be "fun".

I didn't have any choice about the cold the day of my Turkey Trot. This morning I DID have a choice though, the YMCA or cold roads at 32*. I chose cold roads. You're right, this does twist your thinking.

5/22 - Walk @ 32°- 35m 23s - 2.01 miles - 17m 36s /Mi
18 Crappy Winter Weather Challenge pts (CWWC)

After yesterday's disappointing swim I decided a light walk was in order. I had seen the Crappy Winter Weather Challenge and thought it sounded interesting. Naturally, as with everything else tri-related, I started with the realization that I would not actually be competitive. I just wanted to do something weird to keep the "fun" in winter training. Besides, I have to train for the Idita-Trail 9.2 on February 22nd.

How often does that happen, a week of zero points in December.
Looks like winter will return by the end of the week.

It's more like spring than winter in Kingston, Ontario. Our thermometer read 60 Fahrenheit yesterday. Enjoyed some nice trail running but not earning any points. It was hard to find the trail among the leaves in some places and the there was green grass at my childhood home. I'll be back to Alberta soon andhopefully I'll be able to sneak away from home for some cross country skiing.

Training in the cold can be effective and fun with some planning. Overall, prepare for the environment, stay hydrated and dry, listen to your body and have a great safe cold weather outing.
