Subject: buying my first bike
i want to buy a bike for tri's i am using my uni clubs bike for the moment. obvioulsy i don't want to spend to much, but also don't want it to fall apart after 500miles. i have been recommended the trek 1000 and the giant OCR3, whcih are about £399 - 450 range. But then I spoke to someone at a different bike shop and he was like 'they are no good for racing - you need to spend around £700 - 800 for a half decent road racing bike' Now I am thinking this guy is trying to take me for a ride (no pun intended!). I just want to spend not much (less than £399 would be nice) or even get a second hand one (but is that a good idea?) and train and race on it. Any help would be great, as i am now thoroughly confused

help!

I recently had the same dilemma; however, like I was told by many sources, I went up a few notches in the entry level. I went from looking at the trek 1000 and ocr3 to the trek 1500 and ocr1. Significantly higher in price but the upgrades are apparently worth it. Look into the component group for each level, the bottom levels you described are sora components (mostly) whereas the 1500 and ocr1 use 105 and ultegra.. big difference for the price. Obviously you want to buy a bike that will last and do you well. I'm sure the more experienced riders here can help you out further, but as for me, I ended biting the bullet and used my Visa. Good luck

You can race either of these bikes. That "someone" at the bike shop just wants to sell you a more expensive bike. Both, the Trek and the Giant have light aluminum frames and both are equipped with Sora components which are fairly good and reliable. I would only suggest that you have the shifters switched for Tiagra shifter; it won't cost you all that much more.

well i have decided to wait it out a bit. the club said that i can use their bike for now, and for atleast, until september. although it's a better bike than i would buy anyway i think it was worth £1400 new but we got it cheap (so i hope i don't crash!), although when i get mine it will be a downgrade which will be a bit strange!

Thanks for the advice

andy
