This was my first century (which turned into a 107 mile ride due to my unplanned detour). It was an awesome experience. I am thrilled that I finished a century and that I know now that I can do it! Sure it took me over 6 .5 hours but, I will just keep telling myself that I would have done better if I had a road bike.

One thing I have to say is that I have some new found respect (I already had a lot) for all of the IronMen out there. I can not believe that they actually run a marathon after doing this - I could hardly walk up the stairs.

Congrats on the great accomplishment. 6.5 hours seems like a pretty good time to me!

Awesome! That's a goal for me for next summer. Yesterday I hit my final goal for this summer which was a metric century- it was really fun, and I actually didn;t feel that terrible bc I finally got the hang of the proper way to hydrate and eat... Cycling and Tris are so totally sports for thinkers, man, it's not just about the bike or the lungs or the legs-- My respect for the Ironpeople is as much about how smart and sharp they have to be for 10-17 hours. I get dumb and careless after about 3!

And you did a centruy on something other than a road bike? WOW! You'd have done a DOUBLE on a raod bike and begged for more! Get thee to a LBS and get a sale road bike NOW!

I did my first century yesterday too!  My longest ride before doing it was 43 miles, so I was a little worried about finishing it.  What really worried me was I sprained my ankle on Saturday in martial arts while testing for my brown belt.  I wasn't even sure I would start the century.  However, I sucked it up and pushed through.  After the first 30 miles, my ankle just went numb and I could push up those hills without hurting.

Boy, it sure feels great to accomplish something like that. With my ankle looking like a softball, it looks like I'm not going to be able to do the Richmond Marathon after all.  Guess that will have to be a goal for next year.

Congratulations!! That is a great accomplishment. I recently completed my first and had the same thoughts.....I couldn't get off this bike and run 26 feet much less a FULL marathon!!!Definately sheds new light on the goal of being an IM.
