I am doing my first tri on Sunday and when I signed up, they listed the swim as 1/4 mile. Now they've changed it to 1/2 mile. I've trained in a swimming pool all winter so that is very nerve-racking for me (it's in a lake). Any tips? Suggestions? Now I'm starting to really hyperventilate......

thats a big change...whats your swim times now and how long have you been at that level? i would think u u have been swimming all winter that u probably can do the distance...even if u have to side, back or breastroke.

I am not a strong swimmer and usually swim half my workout with breast stroke. If faced with this problem myself, I would just swim more breast and alternate with front crawl when getting tired, or getting the feeling like I think I going to drown!!!! My Sprint is a 400M swim and they better not change that. DON'T WORRY.....YOU CAN DO THIS SWIM!!!!!

Good luck with your tri...be sure to file a race report!!!

Hey Ron, thanks for the tips. I hadn't thought about side or back stroke! I can physically do the swim, it's just that I swam in a pool all winter with sides and a bottom you can SEE!. It's just scary mentally. I'm not a fast swimmer, but slow, strong and steady. Any mental tips for the wide open?
Thanks,
Rhonda

What I always find helpful is to let the super athletes go first - not pleasant getting kicked and pushed around. My first 20-25m I usually breaststroke - this helps me orient myself, see where everyone else is heading and get used to the water [especially if its a bit cold]. After that I start my freestyle. For me the trick is to take it nice and steady and keep the breathing controlled [just like I'm in the pool] rather than doing anything that is going to lift my heart rate and get me tired. If you can "find" a swimmer going your speed then stick behind them if you are a bit nervous but don't make the mistake of swimming faster than your normal speed just to do this. Relax and enjoy! Susan.

In the pool, before your race, practice poking your head out of the water and looking around while swimming... instead of breathing to the left or right, periodically pop your head up and take a good look around to see where you're headed... You can do this easiest while breast stroking... but you can also do it while swimming freestyle.
I'd say stick to the sides or rear of the group to avoid being clobbered by the flailing arms, legs, torsos, etc etc... Don't be surprised if you get whacked, though... it's part of the experience. I wish someone would have told me!! You probably won't be able to see much underwater... but do wear your goggles...
Good Luck... and be sure to let us know how it goes for you... I'm sure you can do the .5 mile swim... just go slow and steady and use breast &/or side stroke if you need to... like Ron said! (This will also help you orient yourself and let you actually see where you're going)

Is there any way that you can swim the course beforehand with a friend of course? That's the best way. O.
