Does anyone have suggestions for a good training book? Obviously something geared for beginners would be great.

By the way swimming is hard!!

The Triathlete Training Bible is a good book. However, it gets very scientific. For a beginner I would recommend Triathlon 101. It gives you a lot of general information and it doesn't require a degree in exercise science to understand it.

I have to agree... Triathlete's Training Bible... I read it this winter... Very interesting, and applicable! Good Luck.

BTW, I skimmed over most of the "scientific" stuff... and pulled out what was most relevant to me in my beginner status.....I don't think I'm at the point where in depth blood gas testing (or whatever they do...) would even help. I just needed the basics, and this book gave them to me... PLUS a whole lot more...(for later!)

Friel is pretty intense but it is a very good book for learning how to train based on a time goal. "Triathlon 101" and "Triathlon Training in four hours a week" are both good intro's. "Training Plans for Multisport Athletes" is great for seeing plans for different distances.

I've read "Triathlon Training" by Michael Finch and it is very basic, up-to-date and provides profiles of today's elite athletes. The training programs have really been great too. A great beginner book. I plan to move up to "Triathlon Bible" next year...

I agree that Friel's book is great, but I started last year with Triathlons 101 - another great book.
I am currently reading Time Saving Training for Multisport Athletes by Rick Niles - I like this book a lot b/c it focuses on quality of work out vs. quantity. It is also encouraging to know that this book is written for an audience that works a 40 hours a week job. I would highly recommend the book!

I have, and often refer to, Triathlons 101.
Good basic book, that gives some great information, but doesn't get too technichal.

I also liked, and still refer to, Triathlon 101, but the book Swim Bike Run by Wes Hobson  can help move you to the next level withouth the science of the Triathlete's Bible.
