Subject: The Biggest Loser - Ironman?

Last night the person on The Biggest Loser who went home said that his goal was to do an Ironman before the finale.

He said it was "a little more than a mile swim, an 80 mile bike ride, and a half marathon."

Maybe he meant a half and meant a 56 mi bike?

He said that is what he did every day to train...swim a mile-1.5 miles, do an 80 mile bike then he runs a half marathon. These guys are doing 8+ hours of excercise at the ranch so my thought he is just doing tri training instead stuff he did with Jillian.

I found it interesting as what IM can he get into? Clearly the show is pretaped as the time they have at home which is I think 3 months gets sucked into time as one week they are on the ranch and next episode is the finale which is 3 months later and live. What IM can he do early season?  Some folks call 70.3 races Ironman.  When the new RI 70.3 was being talked about on TV they always called it Ironman Rhode Island...do differential from hald to full. There are quite a few early season 70.3 races that potentially fit into the show schedule. T

I think you might be right.  He is doing a half.  There is no way he can do all that stuff everyday and still have a family and job.

I too saw the show last night and thought to myself .. what IM can he do right now ? This guy is from Phoenix right ? also. the taping of that show was quite a few months ago. Clearly you can tell by Alison Sweeney's baby "bump" .. last nights show it was maybe 4-5 months "big" .. It was announced 2 months ago that she had a girl, so last nights show was what ? almost 7 months ago ? I think you could've registered for any IM race in that time.. and the finale is still more than 2 or 3 months away.. I think he'll get it done..

I understood him to say that was what he was going to do, not what he does everyday. He said it was his goal to do this before coming back for the final weigh in. I don't know where those numbers came from. I looked at my wife and said pfff! that is not a real ironman and then caught myself and said "I don't want to turn into one of those snobs that I hate!"

I have it recorded on DVR so I'll listen to it later today and report back. I'm pretty sure he said that is what he does training wise.

I did the same thing and just checked. Confirmed that he said that is what he wants to do before coming back to the weigh in. He also talked abut having to get up early to work out before work.

It is not being a snob calling a half a half, and a full a full. That is being accurate.

If you were to do a half and called it a full, then you are cheapening the accomplishments of all that have done a full. 70.3 is not 140.6.

I don't disagree with that, but my initial reaction and comment reminded me of why I used to hate some endurance athletes I encountered when I first started - arrogance and elitism.

True, and I agree with you. Arrogance & elitism are the Achilles heel of our great sport. The Age-groupers that place themselves in that category fail to realize that everyone can be caught. It is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when.

Back to the OP, good for him if he completes either a full or a half. Completing either of those races is a amazing accomplishment.

Especially when my wife responded, "Have you ever done one of those?" Back to reality!

oh, okay.  Either way -- good for him.  To go from an overweight [obese] couch potato to a triathlete is no small feat.  70.3 is not 140.6 but it is still an awesome accomplishment !

He still didn't know what he was talking about when he described the half. Maybe he was trying to make it sound harder than it is? I give him credit for trying. He has lost a lot of weight!

I think he just does not know the distances. For a half he is pretty close the swim (1.2) & run (13.1) correct, but the bike is off. Perhaps he is thinking Km vs Miles, because at least that would be closer (e.g. 90km vs 80Km).

That was my guess.  He probably set the goal of a IM or HIM before really understanding what it was.  He had a fair guess at the distances probably based on some previous general knowledge.

However, I can't lie and say that things like this don't make me a little proud to be a triathlete.  There have been several times that people use "doing a triathlon" as some kind of goal or benchmark for health and fitness - like it's a major accomplishment.

And it's something we do every day!!!  Woot!

I don't think we're being critical.

I never intended to criticize --- I was just wondering if he meant a HIM or an IM.  both amazing accomplishments, but they ARE different races.

No one was being mean about it.  No harm was done.  I think the same thing would happen if I tried to talk law with cop or judge, or medicine with a doctor.  I'm sure I would mispeak, and they would correct me.

I think I was refering to the 80 vs 56 miles.  Bottom line, it's a lot, and good for him to try it.  I think I will let it slide, even though at the time I saw it, I rolled my eyes and mentioned to the wife that "this guy has no idea what an IM is"...

+2. I watched last night and immediately picked up on the fact that it's not a full ironman. Not taking away from the accomplishment but let's be clear. :D Right, maybe it's just because I know the difference.  I know most people don't know so it doesn't matter but for those of us who clearly are a bit obsessed there is a difference and I would never want to misrepresent what i was doing.

Glad to hear he said it on the parts they cut out...

PS - he's done so crazy well! And I love watching to see how people not only lose weight but how their confidence goes up, etc.

That's so weird..... he actually doesn't say I want to do a 1/2 IM even in the unedited clip. He's like I'm doing the Ironman and then it looks like someone off camera might say something to him and he says "Even if it is a 1/2 Ironman - it's still a pretty big feat".

Which of course it is - I like everyone was just laughing last night though that like in the span of 6 months he was just going to find an Ironman race and run right out and do it.

Good for him for setting a big goal. I'll be interested to hear what 1/2 IM he does!
