I guess since races that are happening after this one have their own threads going, its about time we have our own.

Cool, not 100% sure I am doing this one again but trying to get myself motivated.  Will make the decision by December.

I was thinking of doing this race next year.  I did 2 HIM Florida and Augusta next week.  I use to live in New Orleans and grew up in Louisiana.  My brother is the Director of Homeland Security for Louisiana and works with Jindal.  We still have friends in Mandeville.  So I have the option of staying in Baton Rouge or Mandeville.  Any thoughts on the race?  I know it has to be flat.  I know the swim takes place in Lake Ponchatrain which when I was there was polluted.  I think the race ends at City Park which is cool.   I may take my daugher and boyfriend who want to do a HIM.  Because it is flat I figured it would be a good 1st HIM for them.  Any thoughts?

Its a pretty good race but I have only done one HIM.  The swim is at UNO and water quality there is pretty decent.   There was a bit of rough water for the swim.  Not bad for me but later waves got beat up pretty good (but I heard the year before was very smooth).  Ride is fairly flat but there are a couple of bridges to go up/down so not completely flat.  Run now ends in the French quarter which is cool.  My only complaint was that it was miserably hot on the run.  I am not a great runner in the heat and it was way too warm for me.

if they have those cheese grits @ the finish line again, I'm sold for a repeat performance.

This was my 8th HIM but the least favorite that I've done.  Just a few thoughts to consider if you're interested...

- Swim was OK but it smelled like gas fumes the entire time and 2 of us had ecoli infections a little after the race.
- Bike- roads we're REALLY bad, but course was mostly flat.  I knew to expect bad roads but they were worse than I thought.
- Run- it was HUMID as (#@))$@!  Being from GA, we know what heat is all about, but in April, even we haven't acclimated to the humidity that LA has.  My run really suffered.  If heat is a factor for you or you live in a cooler climate, I could see that being a race day issue.

Overall, it was an OK race, but I won't do it again.  If you do race, I'd suggest adding a few days after the race to enjoy the city(if this is a 'destination' race).  We only had the night of the race and I would have liked another full day and night to enjoy some more food and drinks.  Obviously lots of beer and Hurricanes aren't great pre-race!

I've done this race both years and I am as critical as they come, but how can you say the roads were really bad?  Maybe 7 total mile on the bike course was in bad shape, but other than that...it is smooth asphalt.  The reason they had the little out and back on the bumpy service road was becuase of last minute conastruction thrown on to the city by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The entire bike course is closed to traffic (unless local) and most of it is on smooth asphalt.  I think's its a boring ride, but a smooth boring ride.

I hated the swim location this year.  The sight lines were impossible to read fromt the shore line and the rough conditions made it pretty hard to navigate.  The gas fumes you smelled was because the jet skiis were so buys, and there was alot of them.  If they didn't have alot of safety vehcles in the water, people would have complained about that, so I can understand the fumes.

I have had my issues with the race, but done it twice.  The biggest change this year is this will be the first year for a new race director.  The old race director , Bill Burke, was a local and even he fumbled pretty bad the first year...I'm pretty scared what an outside company may do with less knowledge of the area, climate and less political connections.

I thought the road surface was pretty nice and smooth (other than the first and last 2 miles through that neighborhood)

Agreed, they need more buoys on the swim.

I signed up, Monday.  My experience in tris is 3 sprints, done this year (started training in April).  I did run a HM, this past Sunday.  My run training has been good.  My bike training will be there.  I am NOT an endurance swimmer.  And, I've never swum a tri OWS.  My wetsuit should be here, tomorrow.  And, I'll get a few lake swims in, in the next couple weeks.  I can probably get 6 or so in.

I'll be a swimming fool, this fall/winter/spring.  I have to.  Right now, I'm intimidated.  I was intimidated by the HM distance, also (when I started).  By race day, I was chompin' at the bit.  I hope the swimming goes as well.

I was in NO in 1987 on a baseball trip (we played UNO and Tulane) for a week.  That's the last time I saw the place.  I'm gonna get down there on Friday (before the race).  But, I'll probably be heading out on Monday.

Tell me nice things about the Pontchartrain!

I'm in.  What plan is everyone doing?  I'm thinking of doing a 20 week plan Jeff sent me from trifuel but doing Jorge's winter cycling plan for the bike, with a few long rides thrown in.

Ransick...

That plan I sent you is from MATT Lieto....not Chris....lol.  Matt's a pro, too.  But, I think I misrepresented it (and not on purpose).  It's heavier on the bike than most I've seen.  I think that's great.

Everyone send positive swimming vibes my way!

Yep, I caught that.  That plan pretty much matches what I want to do for training.  It may be a little light on running, but less so than other plans I looked at.  For anyone interested, here is the link Jeff sent me http://www.trifuel.com/triathlon-training/Half-Ironman-Training.php

I used that plan for Longhorn.  I rocked the bike and was hurting on the run.  I will use it again but with some modifications.

Looks like I am in for this one, will sign up in a few weeks.  Doing an IM Swim/Bike relay in a couple of weeks so I figure I just need to maintain those two and restart my running which has been pretty much non-existant for the last couple of months.  Will also use Jorges bike program (starting in January) along with some 60 mile rides.

I will be volunteering again this year as I did last year.  Did the race in 2009.  Realized then that I didn't like the big race atmosphere, just not for me.  Was in an early wave so had none of the problems that later waves had (had my own nutrition and fluids anyway).  Swim was smooth for us the first year.  Echo other sentiments about the bike.  For Louisiana, it was some pretty good roads.  Run was hot, but what else would you expect from south LA.  Had fun volunteering in transition last year doing wetsuit stripping and traffic direction.  Will do the same again for 2011.

Any idea about how soon the race will fill up?  I'm thinking about doing it, but would prefer to wait another month or so to decide if I really want to do it.

I'm not sure but with the Miami 70.3 fiasco, I think all of those people get 1 free entry into a race next year.  So some of these races may fill up faster than normal.
