Well next week I start my 16 week training program to get ready for the race.  Haven't seen an official thread for this race yet so I figured its about time one gets started.  Who else is in?

I grew up in that area about 40 miles to the north.  This will be my first 70.3 so I figure I'll have a good deal of support out on the course.  I was torn because I've heard this is one of the tougher 70.3 courses out there because of so many factors.  Then again I always say "if you're gonna be a bear, be a Grizzly"  Looking forward to it.

I'm registered, live in the north Dallas area so training in heat and wind shouldn't be a problem.  I hear it's a tough 70.3 (will be my first), but nobody said they'd be easy.

Thanks for starting the thread.

My first go at this distance too.  I'm originally from the area, and I have heard its one of the tougher halves in the country as well.  Week 1 Day 2 of my plan.....

So I'm in week four of a 16 week plan to be ready by June 30.  I feel like I'm physically well ahead of where I need to be to be ready so that's a good thing.

Swim worries me the most, but I've already done a mile in the pool.  I have an Oly at the end of this month with an open water lake swim so that should provide a good barometer on how ready I am.

How is everyone else coming along on training.  You ahead?  Behind?

Yeah, suddenly there's just 12 weeks to go. I feel I'm on course, although HIM training took a hit in March due to some sprint tris I did (which in hindsight served mostly to ruin a weekend of training) and a medical procedure that took out 6 days of training and had me sitting on frozen peas. Wink  I did run a PR half marathon 2 weeks ago, although overall I need to step up my weekly run volume.

I swim 2700-3000 meters 3x a week, so I'm not worried about the swim distance.  But I still haven't done an OWS due to cold water temps here, but I have two Olys between now and BSLT.

I’ve decided to live off the course to simplify my day, so I started training with lemon-lime Perform.  It tastes just fine to me, but I’m not that picky.  I’m also switching from Hammer gels to Gu Roctane.  Now I just need the Dallas heat to get here for real BSLT training.

So overall, I feel it's going ok.

I'm in & wondering how I'm going to adjust to the heat of west Texas, coming from the Northwest. typically our summers start in July!  Glad to see everyone's training coming along.  Not to worried about the toughness of the course after doing Lake Stevens which has a ton of hills and IM Canada last year.

In as well.  Will be my second....trading the hills of California for the wind of west Texas.

It's funny...the BSLT website says the average high is 91 and the wind averages 10-13mph.  I would take those in a heartbeat.  Every time I'm in that area in the summer, winds are 20-30mph and it's usually 91 by 830am.  It hit 108 a couple of years ago on race day. We'll see.

Just got done with a week off after Oceanside 70.3 and am hitting the ground running for Lubbock.  This week is going to hurt as I have finely prepared my tuned body with a food and beer gluttony experience this past week.  Oh well...

The heat doesn't bother me as I train in Phoenix, so heat is all just relevant.  I even used sponges to keep my core cool in Oceanside and that was a very lovely weather day.  I tried putting ice in my hands and carrying it during the run and that worked okay.  I'm not sure what it did, but I never overheated and I feel it at least kept my hands cool.  For what that's worth.

I'm looking forward to Buffalo Springs.  Should be fun.

Was working an aid station on an ultra one year and watched a guy dump a cup of ice down the front of his shorts every time he stopped.  Said it was the best way to combat overheating he'd found.  Not sure if I'm ready to do that just yet.

I grew up in that area so I know kind of what I'm heading into.  I would agree that the wind averages are low.  Here's hoping for a calm overcast day.

Had a bad Olympic race in Marble Falls this past Sunday.  Mechanical issues on the bike lead to a DNF.  Still answered a lot of my questions on the swim and got a 10K in.  Would have really like to rock it out but it wasn't in the cards.

Now focus on BSLT for the next 60 days.

Sorry to hear about the mechanical issues.  I've got an Olympic this Sunday, forecast is for upper 40s on Saturday night so I'm not looking forward to that swim.  It's taking forever for it to warm up here in Dallas.

40 degrees...ouch.  Well good news is that no matter what the water temp it will feel warmer than the air.  Bad news, once the swim is over you have to run the rest of the race damp and in 40-50 degree temps.

Good luck on your race and check everything, and I do mean everything on your bike.

This question is really for those who have done BSLT 70.3 before...what cassette did you use?  Did you need (or wish you had) something smaller than a 25 for the climbs?  I'm currently running a 12-25 but just got a set of FLO60s and was thinking of going with an 11-28.  I'm running Ultegra and unfortunately they don't offer the 12-27 anymore.

5 weeks to go! This is my first HIM as well. Training is going ok here, just trying to get as much time in the heat as I can. Weather is very strange this year, there's absolutely no telling what the race conditions will be like... just hoping for sub-100F and light winds. I did the intermediate tri there a few weeks ago, I thought the swim markers were difficult to see and there are two tough hills immediately out of T1... then, of course, you end the bike portion going back up the same hill. Should be lots of pain

Last year at BSLT, I rode in the 19 to 20 range and used a compact with an 11x28. I would have been okay with the 25, but it can be nice to know you've got another gear waiting, just in case you need it. Most of the hills are not that steep, but they do get long and the wind can be a factor too.

4 Weeks out. Just finished my last recovery weak before one final mileage push and then the taper. Everyone else ready or there abouts? I've been keeping pretty close tabs on the weather (yuck). I've started adding some of my shorter mileage runs in the mid afternoon to try and acclimate.

Yep, last week was my last semi-recovery week (raced an Oly yesterday), now it's on to the final stretch. I'm starting my Sunday long runs somewhere between 10-11am to get more acclimated to the heat. I'll also do a few short bricks after my long Saturday ride. June got here fast!

What, exactly, do you predict the weather to be? buwahahahahahaha

Same here...although I finished a bike/run brick yesterday at 10:20 (am) and it was 98 degrees. All I need is some humidity now to polish off my suffering and training.
