Veteran 361 Colorful Colorado | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Kansas : Official Thread 5:36, quite a bit slower than I expected. Swim: slow, but it was fun playing in the waves. Bike: I liked the course, but things were a little dicey in a few of the crosswind descents. I dialed it back a few notches, anticipating the carnage on the run. Run: Aaaaagggghhhh. I melted. We've had a cool Spring in Colorado and apparently I have NO heat tolerance built up yet. Plus a bee somehow got in my shoe and stung me a few times. Good times! Next up is Buffalo Springs in 2 weeks -- I'd better do something about the heat tolerance since Texas is even hotter than Kansas. |

"Brutal" is the word of the day. Swimming is my thing and I thougt it was brutal. The wind-created waves were bad enough, but the speed boat waves were killer on the way out. 5:22 for my first 70.3 and I am thrilled. 30:49 swim. 19.8 mph on the bike, and kept it under 9:00/mi on the run. I wanted under 8:00/mi on the run but not a chance of that under today's conditions. All-in-all a great experience and the learning curve shot straight up today. "Team Neon" (my wife and kids) were a great motivation for me and I got choked up seeing them as I crossed the line. Turned a potentially mushy moment into a double fist-pump and maintained my manhood. :-) Jon, Mark, Lisa, Snyderman . . . and everyone -- great job under BRUTAL conditions! My wife wants to rent an RV next year to avoid the multiple drive-ins over the weekend, so party is at our place next year on Saturday night! (Or Friday if I work it correctly.)
Wow -- 30:49 is a heck of a swim in those conditions! Care to share any tips with us on how you dealt with the waves? |

Veteran 139 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Kansas : Official Thread First HIM, done! I finished in 7:51.26 Swim time was 49 min, Bike was right under 4 hours and run was right under 3 hours. I don't think I swam too far out of my way and did a good job keeping an eye on the buoys but was not expecting all o those waves. That wind on the bike was brutal! I was slower on the run than I thought I would be. But finished strong! My parents and husband were there volunteering and cheering me on. I loved all of the water and hoses during the run and contemplated if I really needed a shower after the race b/c of all the water I had been pouring on my head. : ) |

Care to share any tips with us on how you dealt with the waves? The waves were copming from the left on the way out. I would look left but not take a breath to see whether a wave was coming. If so, I would breath on the right on the next stroke. If not, I would take a breath on the left on the next stroke, or sneek a quick breath in on the end of the "wave check" stroke. Another option was to always breath on the right, but that tends to make you veer off to that side and the waves/current was pushing righ, so I wanted to make sure I was breathing on both sides. Another thing I did was to sight straigh ahead on a stroke and take a quick peek left to gauge oncoming waves before dropping my head back in the water. Then I knew which side to breath on for the next few strokes. High arm strokes out of the water helped to avoid snagging my hands/arms on a wave. Another key is to have been a competitive swimmer since the age of 5. ;-) Edited by Jayhox 2012-06-11 10:41 AM |

Pro 9391 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Kansas : Official Thread Here's my GPS data: Swim: http://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/GIQJVW3YACNOGOGCTRUZLOQ7RI (no wonder my swim took so long, according to my GPS I swam 2 miles, lol) Bike: http://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/J26AJWCG5O73LECR6AN3643EU4 Run: http://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/CRESV4A7XKADWY6Q4246TGMVL4 I ended up at 5:43:54 which is respectable for my first HIM. My swim was quite a bit slower than I had hoped, but I took it a little easy going out because of all the waves and then I started pouring it on coming in, but I made another rookie mistake by staying with a group of guys who were swimming to the wrong buoy. So that probably added a hundred yards or more to my swim (grrr). I was shooting for a 35 minute swim and ended up witha 43 minute swim. Bike went very well. I was happy with my effort and nutrition plan. Felt very well hydrated and strong at the start of the run. I was shooting for a 20mph avg. and ended up with a 20.5 in those winds so there's certainly nothing I can complain about there. Now the run, uggh. I normally run at a 7:20-7:30 pace (open runs) so I was planning to go out at a 7:45 pace and see how I felt. Well after running down furnace road to the first water stop I was about cooked and slowed down to a 8:00 pace. Then by the time I got to the water stop down by T1 I was really cooking and just couldn't get cooled off. At this point I knew there was no way I could hold an 8:00 pace so I kind of said the heck with it and did an easy 9:30 jog for the whole run walking at the water stops to make sure I got as much hydration as I could. The sprinklers through the campground were heaven on earth. Ended with a 2:12 on the run |

I drove by the campsite but never really found it. Congrats to all who finished, that swim was a tuffy, I too thought it was hot, but the 7 hour drive south today and it was 99F when I got home. Redman in September anyone? |

Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Kansas : Official Thread Survived as well...barely. Swim was tough for me, I couldn't find anything even close to a rhythm because of the waves! Took a little bit more of Clinton Lake with me that I had intented that's for sure. Didn't feel I did to terribly on the bike but do love that Kansas wind! What the hell was that? 36MPH gusts really? Is that normal wind for that area? Anytime I do any event, big or small, I am always so thankful for the volunteers. They were awesome and made running in a sauna a bit tolerable. I want to congratulate everyone and thank all of you for the information from this thread. It was so helpful and very much appreciated. Everyone was so nice and the venue was great but I think this HIM location was a once and done. Just too early in the season to get enough time out on the road vs. the trainer for such a challenging bike. Really stinks too but many years we don't get on the roads until May in Wisconsin. If anyone is considering coming North to do the Racine HIM please shout (July 15th) or the Milwaukee Marathon (Oct 7th)!!! Best of luck and good health for the remainder of the race season!! Thanks again everyone and Congrats! Amy |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Kansas : Official Thread gordon_mom yeah Kansas weather can be frustrating. The first year for this event a severe storm blew in and they cancelled the race during the run. About half the people didn't get to finish (including me). The wind, unfortunately, is pretty prevalent year-round. I thank my lucky stars every time it's below 15mph. But Sunday was pretty crap-tastic, even for us Kansans. I have a pair of the DeSoto arm cooler wings and only wore them a few times. They made my skin feel feverish - you know when you're hot but shivering, that sensation? My whole body was hot but my arms were cool. It was too weird for me. But I know others really like them. |

Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Kansas : Official Thread Thanks Jon and Lisa. I know what you mean Lisa about that feeling so I think I'll pass. I had no idea you had that much wind most of the time. Seriously you should all come and do the Racine race and enjoy a relatively flat and fast bike. Unless it's a storm we never see that kind of wind. Something very tough to prepare for. Now heat on the other hand we usually have plenty of in July. Hey did anyone see the woman that they took out of the water before her wave started? She had turned back and was yelling for help and one of the guys jumped in off the dock. Just curious if anyone knew if she was ok or what happened? |

YES, they rock. I've got the Zoot arm coolers as well and I could really tell the difference. The other nice thing about them is I'd grab a cup of water and dump half of it on each arm and it kept the water on my arms for a long time giving me a long cooling effect. |

I didn't see it, but I was looking through the Clinton State Park facebook photos earlier today and think they captured it all in pics. Here's one of a guard who looks like he's wearing street clothes swimming out to someone. There's more of him rescue swimming her back to shore. |

Pro 3883 Woodstock,GA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Kansas : Official Thread Kansas folk I owe you all an apology for not taking your hills seriously. That was by far one of the hardest races I have ever done and I have been at this for about 14 years. I think the swim was long, I noticed on Saturday when they were pulling the buoys out that they had them tied together to be exact distance but I don't think they took into account the offset from the first/last buoy to the dock. One of my athlete's Garmin 910 had the swim at 1.45 miles (~400m long). I had an (almost) personal worst at 41:xx The bike was brutal! Those hills are no joke add in the 20-30mph winds and it was a recipie for a sufferfest. I held my projected wattage of 225w and it got me 19.8mph which is the slowest HIM bike since my first one in '02. The run wasn't too bad, I started off running pretty well and then the heat got to me. I decided that since I wasn't going for a Vegas slot anyway I would just run an easy pace into the finish and ended up with a 2:10. All of you who finished should be proud, that was as tough a day as I have ever seen. |

I really didn't think the hills were that bad....Branson is 100x worse. The wind is what made everything suck. That swim was really really tough. I saw a pontoon boat full of competitors that DNF. Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Kansas : Official Thread I think the wind really made the "climbs' seem much worse than they really are. That out&back portion into those 20-30 mph winds was really tough, on training rides I am never on the small ring in front, but I was on it on race day on that part of the course. I usually enjoy the long climb starting at mile 49, not Sunday, I was cramping up and went out much too hard. I thought since I was doing the relay I could just hammer the bike the whole way.....Ha Ha. You guys did a great job finishing that tough race. |
