Nah, that WAS the 18% ..... been up steeper stuff but shorter hills.

I actually think Westchester is harder.

That looks like a great ride. From your link, the profile looks insane. But doing the math, the steepest signficant climb appears to be from the 18.25 mile point for 3 miles up 920 feet of climbing. That's a 5.8% average grade. A 5.8% climb up 920 feet is very tough. A poster above whose climb was "only" 2% climbed a similar gain and I have no doubt that it was tough. Climbs get much harder the longer they are sustained even if the grade is relatively low. A perfect example is one of our local rides which is a very famous climb. It climbs 6,700+ over 27 miles ("only" a 4.6% average grade) topping out at 14,264' of altitude. And if you come ride it, you can compare your time to great pro climbers in history going all the way back to the 1960s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Evans_Hill_Climb

Ithink that map I posted is inaccurate  - for sure it seems to accentuate climbs, to make it look "harder" than it is.

For sure, though, Joaquin is 18+% in incline for nearly 0.4 miles. If anything, the incline is concentrated in specific sections (that aren't that short!)  I ride with fast Cat4s and can beat Cat5 champions, and I was doing walking pace on my bike up that hill - it's so steep that it's hard to even WALK up it!

18% for a 0.8...THAT is a hill.  The short steep stuff doesn't bother me...an 0.8 mile hill with a steady 18%...ouch.  I've only made it up 2 out of 4 attempts.

not to hijack, but I looked at my run yesterday, and the last .3 miles had an elevation change of 230 feet for an 13% grade (230/1746)...it felt a lot worse... :P  time to HTFU

Not as steep as some of the shorter climbs, but by far the hardest sustained effort I have ever done:

Assault on Mt. Mitchell Climb Breakdown - Approximates

Mitchell Climb (Lst Yr) 4800 ft/20 miles 240 ft/mile 4.5%
(does not include initial hills outside of Marion)
(hardest subsegment)9.7 miles of the 20 = 5.8%

Hwy 80 on Mitchell 1505 ft/3.9 miles 385 ft/mile 7.3%

State Park on AOMM 1325 ft/4.35 miles 305 ft/mile 5.8%
(hardest subsegment)2.2 miles of the 4.35 = 7.8%

All this after riding 80 miles to get to the base of Mt. Mitchell.
