This years course will definitely be faster. Although if the wind is up on race day, it could make things a little more difficult. Pretty much a flat course. The only thing I don't like is the stretch of road it takes place on (W. Grand) has cracks/concrete divisions every 15-20ft. Basically.... thump, thump.... thump, thump..... thump, thump.... for nearly the entire bike course.

Otherwise, it's a simple & straight out and back for the bike. It'll be fun to see everyone coming and going on the route, but not much for scenery.

Solid training to all!

Are there any opportunities to practice the swim, bike, and/or run? Is anyone doing that now?

Try hooking up with the DSM Tri. They meet regularly for practice/informative sessions a few times per week. Likely more as Hy-Vee gets closer. Beyond that, you're probably on your own.

I'm gonna run the course tomorrow to so I know what's coming and how to manage it.

I'll report back next week.

Does anyone know what the current water temperature is at Raccoon River Park and/or what the water temperature may be on race day?  I don't own a wetsuit so I am banking on the water being warm enough to disallow wetsuits.  What are the odds of the water temperature being that warm?  Also, I would like to do a training swim there in the next week or so and am wondering if it is warm enough to swim without a wetsuit now.

I don't know what the temperature of the water is currently and I'm not sure where you live, but I live in Omaha which is just 2 hours west of Des Moines and the weather has been very mild here so far (not even supposed to hit 70 today) and unless we get a string of 90+ degrees for two weeks in a row, I believe that wetsuits will be allowed (I think the water temperature has to be 70 degrees or more to disallow wetsuits and it takes a lot of heat to get a big body of water that warm). 2 years ago they were not allowed and that was a really hot summer with a string of 90+ degree days right before the race. Last year I would say the weather was a little warmer than what we are currently having and wetsuits were allowed. So, I'd say if you can get your hands on a wetsuit do it.

Wetsuits will be legal.  The water temperature has to be greater than 78 degrees to disallow wetsuits, unless you're racing elite:
USAT Rules
4.4 Wet suits. Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wet suit without penalty in any event
sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water
temperature is greater than 78 degrees, but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wet
suit at their own discretion, provided however that participants who wear a wet suit within this temperature range
shall not be eligible for prizes or awards. Age group participants shall not wear wet suits in water temperatures equal
to or greater than 84 degrees Fahrenheit. The wetsuit policy for elite athletes shall be determined by the USAT
Athletes Advisory Council. The AAC has set the wetsuit maximum temperature for elite/pros at 68 degrees for swim
distances less than 3000 meters and 71.6 degrees for distances of 3000 meters or greater.

That's for the clarification on the water temp. Obviously I was way off. Regardless, I agree that wet suits will be allowed the morning of the race.

I don't know about Hy-Vee's lake, but Copper Creek (east side of Des Moines) was 73 degrees a few days ago and was down to 70 yesterday.

Thanks for the help guys.  I'll have to look into getting a wet suit if at all possible.

Alright, so here we go with a string of 90+ degree days the week before the race. Does anyone (pcm95 or others) have a reading on water temps in Des Moines currently? I'm bringing my speed suit for sure now just in case wetsuits are disallowed.

I'm guessing that Blue Heron is around 72-74 right now. You're dead right though in that we're going to see some hellish temps over the next few days which will definitely bump the temp up. Hard to say if it'll go over 78, but I think it'll be close. Either way, your right to bring the speedsuit.

Personally I don't mind swimming with out wetsuit as much as I hate running in extreme sun, heat & humidity. I'm crossing my fingers for overcast, mild humidity and mid 80's!

I found out last night that they are posting the temp. on the official race website. You can find it if you go to the locations tab and then to Blue Heron Lake. Anyhow, as of Saturday is was 67 degrees. I'm sure that it's higher than that after the past few days and will continue to climb after today.

This is from the official race website (hyveetriathlon.com) as of 10:00 AM on 6/23:

Blue Heron Lake current water temperature as of June 23, 2009: 83°

As of today, this is not a wetsuit-legal swim.
