For Marathoners...Goofy's Challenge! (Page 2)

Congratulations girl... I am also crazy.. thus expect my registration anytime soon...   I only need to explain my wife why it is SUCH a good idea to do this.... but I am in....

Accomodation

Is there anywhere for runners to stay on site or has everyone got to find their own accomodation.

I'm looking to enter both, if accomodation is not too much money or hassle.

It'll be an exciting achievement to put on a CV. Any advice would be appreciated.

I've been reading the post about Disney's marathon....
I ran the Disney Marathon in January this year.
My experience is that this is a great event for first timers. In my opinion:
1.- Yes, It is not cheap, I paid $100 dollars entry fee. The medal is beautiful (If you care about that, I am sure first timers like me do). They have good pre and post race events. Nice organization. I didn't feel I was scamed out of $100.
2.- The T-shirt I got is a long sleeve coolmax t-shirt with the logo on it (definetely the best I've gotten from any race). We got late to the expo and they ran out of my size. They took my name and I got my t-shirt on the mail couple monts later. They sent me e-mails constantly about the status of my t-shirt. They apologized and I got a free entry for the 5K that I can apply to a family member...
3.- In my case (Disney 2006), the event was well organized. I thought the course was good for a beginner. It changed constantly, they were not limited by rest stops like other races where you run, turn around and come back the same route to better utilize water stops! I've been to all the parks and I found interesting to run the "hidden" paths. There were many, many volunteers and they absolutely made a difference.
4.- Yes, I had to be there at 3:30am... well I got there at 4am. But it was great to be that early. There were over 20.000 people running that day, Around 4:30am the traffic was getting crazy (to get into the parking lots). I think they know how to handle incredible amounts of people, the least we could do was to get there earlier. Plus I got to see the fun people in all kind of customs (BTW, most of them running the half). After couple events I realize you gain so much by getting to the races very early.
5.- Orlando's weather in January varies tremendously. You could be freezing at 35 degrees or in my case run in comfortable 70's degrees weather. In any case the best bet is to be prepared. I carried warmer clothes just in case. Like any other race you should check the weather and prepare accordingly. A flashlight is a plus for your race bag
Next year they are separating half and full marathon. I am not sure how that will work, it may be different than this year.

Wow, running in the happiest place on earth. What could be better? I think I have to twist my hubby's rubber arm on this one!

I am going to try to talk my husband into doing the 1/2 with me. As of today the longest I have run is 2 1/2 miles, so doing the full marathon or both seems like it might never happen! You never know though - about 7 weeks ago I couldn't even run a half mile...

Everyone has to start somewhere, you do have a full 6 1/2 months to get ready...

I know I have to start somewhere - that's why I can't believe I can already do 2 1/2 miles! I don't know if I have a goal to do long distance running so I thought I would start small and work my way up. I'm trying a sprint tri in July, a 5K in early August, maybe another sprint with my husband in mid-August and who knows from there. When I get bored I'll stop, if not I'll try to go for the full marathon. My biggest obstacle is my 3 kids - I can't get as much training in as I'd like to so I will probably need the 6 1/2 months to get ready!

Actually, last year they had kind of a cool long-sleeve dri fit shirt. I liked it.

Why not add the 5k before the half also....you can rack up 3 medals in 2 days.

Correction: the Pop hotel on the grounds, the rate is $79 a night! Pretty hard to beat.

Come on Janelle...come on....

BTW: I am planning on attempting to run the half in my Disney costume. I am on the fence about wether to run the 5k Saturday also. I will decide today, I know I can run that in my costume.

I would, but I already committed to Max's Tampa Bay Marathon crew.

No, I've already registered for Disney. Besides, Tampa is too easy; they aren't offering 3 medals for doing the 1/2 and full. Gotta go with the Challenge with my JeepFleep who is bringing me burritos. Sorry!

You kiddies enjoy Mouseworld, the grown-ups are headed for Vegas in early December.

I  TOLD you already I might be there too! Stop pressuring me! You know I can't pass up races! I just cant do them all...*runs to her room crying* New Orleans, Florida, Texas, Vegas...I can't handle it...aaaaagggghhhhh

I'll come down and cheer everyone on.  I did the Disney Marathon back in 2000.  Good times!!  Just me and my lucky Roger Rabbit t-shirt.  I've never had a good race wearing a different shirt.  Strange.
