What can I do to get rid of the ravenous hunger I feel after I swim. I can run for 2+ hours and not feel hungry after....I can ride for 4+ hours and not feel hungry after....but a 30-40 minute swim has me feeling like I haven't eaten in a week! I get home and I feel like I could eat a horse.

For the record I swim in at 6:00 in the morning most of the time and I will eat 2 pieces of toast & PB and one Hard boiled egg with coffee at around 5:15ish.

Any suggestions? OR do I just put up with it? Would  a bottle of Gatorade at the pool help?

Put up with it. There are a couple threads about the ravenous hunger after swimming all out of proportion to the swimming done.

Eat light before you go. I drink a large cup of coffee (caffeine is an appetite suppressant)  immediately after I swim followed by an Ensure. I am good till lunch.

I need food and a nap after a swim workout.  Biking and running leave me invigorated.

Generally, the hunger is your body's way of dealing with the fact that your core temperature is a little low. Most pools are anywhere from 78-83 degrees (except the one I swim at, which is an ungodly 86) and so it slowly drops your body temp even though your are working hard and sweating.  If there is a hot tub, 5-10 minutes will do wonders to warm you up and lessen the hunger. If there is no hot tub (again, my pool doesn't have one, maybe that's why the pool is so warm...) a longish, hot shower will help too. Or drinking a hot beverage.  But this is actually one of the reasons that researchers speculate that people that swim for exercise (as their main form of exercise) don't tend to lose as much weight, because they eat more due to the hunger that swimming creates.

Take a post swim snack with you!  I always feel hungry as well...I think that's normal!

Same problem.  Suggest coffee when you get done swimming, then go out and bike before you have a chance to hit the kitchen.  The coffee takes the edge off appetite.

hey Lodewey....that makes sense. My pool used to have a hot tub but it's out for repairs....they have a sauna I'll try after my next swim. Thanks for everyone's input.

Coffee is a great thing isn't it!? Especially at 0515. It can though (caffeine in general), give a false sense of hunger. I've noticed this over the years and have reduced my intake by half with success. The "ravenous, gonna eat shoe leather if I have to" feeling is more in control. Also, for some reason, the post workout physical state is different with swimming than biking or running. If my swim workout is strenuous and I go to work or need to concentrate on something it's more difficult.

Your schedule probably dictates your early morning workout, but is there anyway to tweek the intensity, or schedule? Good Luck!

This is what I read too. So, I try to use the sauna afterward. definitely helps!

I generally do not eat prior to swimming and swim at 5:30 a.m.

I usually have breakfast waiting for me in the car.  I cook scrambled eggs with spinach or broccoli before leaving then either eat it cold in the car or heat it as soon as I get to office after swimming.  Have a thermos of hot coffee too.

I swim in a cold pool, afterwards I sit in a steam room for 20 minutes. I am still starving after a good swim.

Thats why I thought there was a ice cream shop on the way home!!!

I probably do everything wrong, but it works, so I'm not changing it...

I swim at 0500 and don't take anything before hand but some sips of water.

During the swim, I nurse on the same bottle of water.

Afterwards, I finish the water off before heading to the office. When I get there, I eat 2 hardboiled eggs, a cup of oatmeal and 2cups coffee.

Seems to work for a couple of hours until my mid morning snack

I swim at 8:30 at night now. After I could easily eat. Which is not the best idea at 10:00 PM. I might have part of a protein bar or a banana. Also takes me a while to wind down after a swim. If I had a choice I'd rather swim in the AM.

Hmm, I was ravenous today and the pool was a bit cooler than normal. Where did you find this info?

I don't eat before I swim.  (Momma told me not to...)  Seriously, my swim workouts are typically an hour, so not in danger of depleting glycogen stores, so there's no need eat before.  Yes, I'm hungry afterward, but as I didn't eat before, well, there you go.  Problem solved.

Oh guys tell me about it!!  Swimming makes me so hungry after swimming it drives me nuts, through being diabetic into the mix and it's a whole other sort of fun Laughing.  I have to have two breakfasts on a swim morning because of it.  If I swim in the evening I end up having to get up in the night to make sure things haven't gone wild during the night so I try to do my swim as early as possible.  I've tried a number of different things to get round it but have come to the conclusion that swimming just makes you hungry and deal with it LOL.
