Subject: Treadmill Running vs. Outside Running
Does anyone ever get the feeling that running on a treadmill is harder than running outside? I've noticed this several times before and can't determine whether there's an actual physical reason for this or if it's all just mental (in my head)? Maybe it's because it's so boring I can't focus?

I thought I remembered seeing some article before explaining why running on a treadmill is more difficult. But seriously, I can easily hold a 10:00 mile pace outside but it seems so much more difficult and painstaking when I'm on a treadmill.

I feel the same way. My treadmill running is always slower than my outdoor running, but who knows why. Maybe it's mental; maybe not.

I'm a bigger guy - 6'4 with long legs - and find that most treadmills are just too "small". Even with an incline, I find myself "crashing" into the head of the treadmill often enough to bother me.. I've tried to run at the back of the treadmill but still end up running faster than what I've programmed.. I guess running outside I can do tempo runs whenever I feel like it (to the next pole sprint) vs. actually programming the machine to accept a faster speed or steeper incline..

my treadmill pace is always slower (by a minute or so) than my pace outside.. i've tried to pick up the speed on the treadmill and it's not a cardio problem.. it's just that I can't seem to keep my legs going that fast without fear of falling off the darn thing

Running on a treadmill at 0.0% grade is easier than running outside. Most articles suggest increasing the grade to 1.0% to even things out.

There is an article/link that has been posted that shows what trendmill pace = in real world. I can't seem to find at the moment.

Yesterday the choice for me was running outside on ice/slush in the teens for 5 miles or the treadmill, I picked outside.

I find treadmill soooooo boring and it feels different to run. I set it on 1% grade to adjust for difference compared to outside running. I to am a bit slower on a treadmill by maybe 30 seconds a mile.

Seems like 10 minutes on the treadmill is like running outside for an hour.

Mental toughness someone pointed out that treadmill running builds mental toughness which I need for IMLP so maybe some treadmill runs will be good for me.

Man, I think this way all the time.  I hate running in the cold so most of my work is treadmill.  I am slow to begin with but I am lucky to get a 9:30 mile pace going on the treadmill without fainting.  I've used crappy treadmills at home and and $$$ ones at the gym but it doesn't matter.  I think it is the boredom factor.   But I don't have a PhD.

See, I'm the exact opposite.

I can keep a 9:00-10:00 minute mile on a treadmill, but can't run that fast outside. A treadmill makes me push myself and keep a pace I can't seem to make myself do outside.

Any running is better than no running... I tend to keep a slightly faster pace inside.  The 'scenery' is much better at my large gym and I also crank up the Ipod indoors, which is a motivator for me as well.  I don't increase the incline to 1-2% like the experts say to, in order simulate outside running.  I have never noticed a large decline in my outside times due to running at 0% incline.  However, I am not stressing over finishing a 10k in 49 minutes as opposed to my normal 55-57 minutes, either.  I just finish.

Tony (aluminum1) told me that while he was training for IMLP and the VA Double that he used to only do tempo runs on the treadmill so he could really control the faster pace, and it forced him to keep that pace for the interval.

Maybe this will help you in your DREADMILL endeavors. Only do your tempo work inside, then you are paying attention to the clock also. Just an idea.

woot! same here! Many say they go faster on a treadmill! Not me!!!

"They" say that you are not really running on a Dreadmill.  Your body is hoping from step to step.  The mechanics are close but you will use more of your calves and quads as you "run" due to the fact you are pulling your legs and the ground is pushing your legs away.  This limits the effort that your hamstrings have to make.  Running outdoors uses more of the muscle groups.  Just something I have heard.  Don't know if it true or not but it sounds good, just thought I'd throw it in to further confuse people.

Like KathyG, I also hate running on the dreadmill. I went out last night with temps in the teens and some extremely slick streets. I would rather run slow outside than inside. Like most everyone has said, I can't keep the pace on the dreadmill like I can outside. Also the fresh air and nature keeps me going a lot more than running inside.

I like the treadmill for tempo runs and paced training as it forces me to go to the new pace  and get used to it a bit....

but now that I have my Garmin that MIGHT be somewhat moot.

Ditto with slower on the treadmill. I usually do some 'hills' so that there is an excuse for the slower pace and so that it may feel easier next time outside. The streets in rural Michigan are dark and slushy these days, and the bike paths are covered in a foot of snow. It's been a lot of trainer rides and the occasional treadmill run lately.

I've run on a treadmill maybe a whopping 3 times in my entire running "career."

It's a personal thing, but if I absolutely can't get out and run then it is just God's way of telling me to either take a rest day or get on my bike trainer .......

And if you can't push a tempo pace outside and need a treadmill to do it, then what are you going to do in a race???  Same thing with a electrical toy.  None of those will actually get you to push yourself.

It's not a macho/hardcore thing, it is just how I train.  There is no weather I have not run all my different runs in (long, fast, recovery, interval), so there is nothing I haven't been through come race day.  Today I had a great run and it was frickin' 14 degrees out with 10 - 15 mph sustained winds.  Even my Gu2O turned into a slushie that I couldn't drink towards the end because it wouldn't go through the bottle spout.  But I was dressed for it and was toasty other than my face!

I've heard plenty of people say that they like the treadmill to regulate their pace for the tempo work because it allows them to stay even and consistent.  But once again, I go back to the real world race situation ..... other than racing in totally flat locations with no wind, when is that ever going to happen?  Besides, tempo work is not all about pace, it is keeping your effort in a certain range whether you are going up a hill, flat or down.

To each their own.  I still don't see a need for one (a treadmill) personally ........

I can't run in the cold, it is a horrible experience for me. Especially the wind chills of -10 degrees. I need to be hot and sweaty when I run and I have to wear way to many clothes to be hot and sweaty which limits my movements. Then I sweat and then find myself with a headwind even when I try to plan it out so that I don't have a headwind when I'm sweaty. Now I'm turning into an icicle! Beyond that, the sweaty clothes rub my body and make my skin feel like pins and needles.

I hate treadmills, but I hate the cold even more. And yes, I do find that I have a slower pace on the treadmill, but I have started using my heart rate monitor and I know I'm working just as hard on the treadmill as I do outside.

I agree with Tony.  Last year, I dreaded running on the TM.  My head told me there was no way I could do a Tempo on it and it always won!  This year due to a lot of snow and ice on the roads and an early Spring marathon, I bought a new TM and learned to embrace it.  I have done all of my Tempo runs and most of my long runs on it successfully.  For me, it was a state of mind.  Now I feel like I am going to crush that Tempo run everytime.

One way to get used to doing faster paces on the TM is doing 4-6 1 minute pick-ups at a pace faster than your Tempo pace followed by a minute recovery.  That way you can start your Tempo pace and it will not feel as hard.

I usually find myself running much slower on the treadmill and I usually up the elevation to make things a bit tougher/realistic to running outside.
I really prefer to run on an indoor track when the weather outside doesn't allow for running, rather then jog on a treadmill.

I'd rather run outside, but somedays it is easier to talk myself into a perfectly climate controlled 30 min run on the treadmill.  This time of year I have too much ice and junk to deal with outside.   I cant do more than 45 minutes on a stationary machine of any kind without going nuts, though.    

I usually "accidentally" run 8:30-9:30 miles outside at an easy effort.  On the treadmill, those are high effort runs.
