Extreme Veteran 356 Orlando, Florida | Subject: Peachtree RR Moved out of piedmont park http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/atlanta/stories/2008/01/11/piedmont_0112.html Wow. I was shocked when I heard the news today. The city of Atlanta has told all the big festivals and the peachtree race they cannot use the park this year due to the drought. This is the quote on the ATC site Due to the drought, the City of Atlanta has asked all large events in Piedmont Park to relocate this year. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race 10K will go on as scheduled. More details to follow It shall be interesting to see what happens. Hopefully they dont change the course...unless maybe they run it backwards and end at lenox |

Master 2485 Atlanta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Peachtree RR Moved out of piedmont park This is gonna make things interesting, logistically, if ATC is determined to keep the race start at Lenox. That last segment off of Peachtree, down 10th St, to the park, seemed to go on forever.. c |

It's fun if (1) you run in the back and just enjoy the spectacle while getting your 6 miles in, or (2) if you submit a qualifying time and get into time group 1. We do it every year. : ) |

You can use a 5k for a Peachtree qualifying time? This I did not know. Any idea what time you need for sub-seeded? c |

Don't every put "this is my first race" on your form or you will be last. We did that one year - it was fun, but we were younger and spryer then. http://www.atlantatrackclub.org/at02002.htm |

Pro 3705 Vestavia Hills | Subject: RE: Peachtree RR Moved out of piedmont park It would make more sense to have the race conclude in Olympic park, but that would add distance that would have to be lobbed off from the top ... then where would they put the 250 portapotties? Marta? Parking? Betcha they run it backwards this year ... which would be a bummer because there is a difference in running UP as opposed to DOWN Peachtree Street. |

Elite 3658 Roswell, GA | Subject: RE: Peachtree RR Moved out of piedmont park If you are looking for a qualifier, the CRR 10K in Sandy Springs is the fastest 10k I've seen. It is about 3 miles flat/downhill, 1 mile uphill, then 2 miles straight down hill. It also only attracts runners. No walkers or strollers. Last year at about 2 miles I saw the Kenyan who won go flying by at a section where the course doubles back. The funny part was watching the chase group try and keep up. He went by smiling and waving. They went by looking like they might die. |

Elite 3658 Roswell, GA | Subject: RE: Peachtree RR Moved out of piedmont park I just found this on the Atlanta Track Club website: SUB-SEEDED (Sub 42 minutes): All runners (male & female, age 10 & older) who have run a 10K race in 41:59 or faster qualify for sub-seeding. This time must have been run on a U.S.A. Track and Field (USATF) certified course anytime after March 1, 2006. TIME GROUP 1A (42:00 through 49:59): All runners (male & female, age 10 and older) who have run a 10K race in 42:00 through 49:59 qualify for Time Group 1-A. This time must have been run on a U.S.A. Track and Field (USATF) certified course anytime after March 1, 2006. TIME GROUP 1B (50:00 through 54:59): All runners (male & female, age 10 and older) who have run a 10K race in 50:00 through 54:59 qualify for Time Group 1-B. This time must have been run on a U.S.A. Track and Field (USATF) certified course anytime after March 1, 2006. |

Master 1404 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: Peachtree RR Moved out of piedmont park 5k's are not qualifiers. That and there is no Silver Comet 5k.. Only a Silver Comet 10k. I think there is more to this than the drought. Removing all festival traffic from the park is not going to do any more this year, than other years. The Drought is deep into the soil, not at the surface. The grass and few inches underneath can be just as dry any year as they are under the current drought conditions. Two months of normal rain as we are experiencing now will have the grass at a normal state. It's not the same as Lanier being down by 19 feet. Also, it doesn't explain Dogwood. That's on the roads within the park. There just seems to be no logic behind this decision. It's really nothing more than an excuse. Not that I care or anything I just hate seeing this city become a cultural wasteland. Edited by atl_runner 2008-01-15 3:51 PM |

Not that I care or anything I just hate seeing this city become a cultural wasteland. Ron....I have to disagree. I don't think this is any conspiracy theory or anything. Piedmont Park has already had to take a stand on other issues to PRESERVE the current turf such as banning cleats on the grass. You are correct that the drought is deep into the soil but that means the top layer is just dead or near dead and more susceptible to being ripped and shredded....hence no more cleats. I think the city had to look at the issue from a risk-reward & cost-benefit perspective. As it stands, there doesn't appear to be relief on the way for the drought. With that, the city is unlikely to completely lift the watering ban. They may reduce it if the outlook improves. The city, by moving these festivals, is saying that we are not above our own law. With the Peachtree, that is 100k people on the grass. I would dare to say it might do more damage to the park than at any other time of the year (I don't know how big the other festivals are). I would be curious to know what type of repairs are taken...plus the cost (i.e. resodding, watering, bringing in sand and fertilizer) Certainly none of us, and I would say the city too, wants to see the Peachtree moved. But for once, I would prefer government be proactive and efficient with its resources. If this means moving a few festivals to save money and preserve the park, then I can't argue with that. Now....what is interesting is which festivals were able to stay. I would like more information on that.
