I'm 6'2" 208lbs and I can do just under 30 if I were to do 1 set only. I am new to Tri's but not new to working out. Ex-college athlete and own 3 personal training businesses. I do like crossfit but it still kills me to see people doing that type of pullup. If you are fit and do it properly that there's great, but do yourself a favor and stick to traditional pull ups if you are not good at them.

I started doing these in early January, one month before heading to Airborne School. I am 5'10'' and 160 pounds.

Starting out I could do sets of 6, full extension, medium width, palms facing away form me.

Now I can do sets of 9. Slowly building up.

Awesome exercise!

That was really the last time that I can remember doing pullups...Morning PT, before each of the meals..and of course all the "pulling up" in the suspended agony. lol

The guy in front of me for all of these...was an combat engineer that looked like he had been doing pull ups since he was about 4. What ever we were asked to do, he would double it. Slow, dead hang. He would do one set, putting his chin over the bar, and the the second set putting the bar behind his head...to the top of the traps. Man, I hated following him to the bar.. lol

I used to be able to do about 10, but that was quite a few bowls of mac and cheese ago. Now, it would be 1 non assisted..on a very good day. I'm starting crossfit on Monday... so, I hope to change this soon..

Had a pullup PR this morning!  100 of 'em in 6:17, leading to 120 in 7:48.  Only six months ago I couldn't do 10 without completely fatiguing...let alone 100.  The first time I did 100, it took me 12 minutes, that was August of last year.

So for those of you that think you'll never be able to do them, keep practicing.  Cuz if I can do this, so can you!

Pullups rock.  Plain and simple.

My personal record in 1 set all the way up-all the way down wide grip pull-ups is 14. This is after 6 months in the gym 5 nights a week. I usually do 3 sets of 8 though

I have no idea how many in a row.  I am 6'3" and 220.  My pull up routine on back days are 5-10's, 4-15's, or 3-40's but the 40 sets are assisted with resistance bands.  I alternate hand grips.  Sometimes as an added pleasure I will rotate hand grips in the middle of each rep at the top of the lift.  My gym has the 8 different grip set so it makes it fun and interesting.  This change was actually inspired by the "Ninja Warrior" contest you see on late night TV.

I'm at 8 full drop and raise pull ups. Anybody here recommend an at-home pull up bar? I've been meaning to get one forever.

Learn how to perform a proper pull-up, triathletes. Palms facing forward, semi-wide grip, all the way up, chin completely over the bar, then all the way down. No bucking or shaking.

You are only cheating yourself if you do it any other way.

Nice! 26 deadhang is huge.

I got myself a little PR today. My CF gym does something called Weekend Warriors where they let people come in for free on Saturday mornings to try out the workouts and such so I went to help out and socialize even though I wasn't doing the workout (I have my first ever Oly distance race tomorrow). In any case I was goofing around on the pull-up bar with a few other of my friends who are doing the race with me and I mannaged to do my very first kipping one handed pull-up!!! Woo-hoo, I was very excited.

Have been playing with Simple Fit for a few weeks now and for the first time this weekend, was able to actually do 2 consecutive pullups (palms away) - no swinging or rocking, just 2 honest to goodness pullups. I've never had a lot of upper body strength and in the past have managed about 10 with palms facing, but never anything with hands facing the other way. Can't quite match the 100 that an earlier post did, but I was pleased nonetheless!

Yesterday I completed a great pullup excercise from crossfit.com.

You start your timer and in the first minute, you complete 1 pullup then rest for the remainder of the minute, when a minute is up you complete 2 pullups in the second minute, then 3 in the third, etc, until you cannot complete the appropriate reps within the 60 seconds.

I managed 12 complete rounds which totaled 78 pullups for the workout!

Proper form and full range of motion is key to a legitimate pull-up

I would totally disagree with this post.  As a personal trainer you can do pull ups form many different hand positions depending on what you want to train and focus on.  A wider grip will offer a slightly different focus than a narrow grip.  An underhanded grip will bring more bicep into play and a perpendicualr grip is a combo yet very handy if you are not able to perform the forward facing grip.  I do agree with the all the way down comment, but to say you are only cheating yourself is not an accurate statement.  Just like with lifting weights variation in your lifts and routines is critical to maximize gains.

Just noticed this thread... I can do anywhere from 5-10 depending on how I'm feeling that day. Dead hang, all the way to a straight elbow, no swinging. 5-10 220lb.

When I was 235lb I did sets of 8 with 20lb added.

At 174 lbs and 6'1" I'm up to 12 Pull Ups - good form and each from a dead hang - not the CrossFit swing style.

I hope to be able to get up to 20 in 1 set this summer!

two months ago I could do only one....that was at 226lbs and 5'10"

Now I can do 6 dead hangs.....thats at 202lbs.

I just bought one of the cheap bars that mounts in a door frame from walmart. I put it in the master bath door way so every time I go to the bath room I do a couple.

19 straight pull ups, 48 kipping "crossfit" style pull ups. (without stopping)

And I totally disagree with the statement that kipping is not a pullup. Once you learn and do them as much as you can you would see. I did 100 the other day and my lats have hurt more than any other time. Without kipping I was never able to get that extra burn. You get to fatigued and have to quit. If you toss in a kip you can force yoruself to go farther and get that extra work.

This has sparked my interest. I know I am very weak and  can probably barely do one or more but next time to the Y I will give it a shot. Then as the weight comes down i will keep testing myself to see what happens.

Just saw this...I do pull-ups at the gym a few times a week after I run on the treadmill and do all my ab exercises - I'm up to 23 with medium grip and palms outward. As soon as I finish these, I then do dips and head to the weights for 45 minutes to an hour of lifting.

I enjoy doing the pull-ups and I've noticed around the gym that it is one of those exercises (like running and doing insane numbers of crunches) you can do in an exercise facility that drives the guys who only lift weights crazy. You can see the envy in some of their eyes. Then they go back to being one dimensional in their workout.

Want to get into crossfit - looks like a pretty cool way of building up strength and stamina.

During the offseason, I get up to 2 sets of 10 (wide grip, palms out, dead hang). During the season, when I don't strength train as much, it's probably more like 2 sets of 5-6. I don't do the palms-in close grip pullups b/c they feel like they're straining my elbows.

Legit pullups military style I did 23 before.  Now that ive been doing tri weight training only I can only do 17-18 legit.  Always loved pullups, my caleses  are engraved in my hands from years of it, that and not wearing gloves at the gym.
