no matter how good or bad of shape I am in... 8-12.

Once, I may have had a summer when I could do 15-18...

I attribute this to years of swimming.
I have always had lats.

saling4 - 2009-04-01 8:27 PM Yeah buckeye I have become a big pullup fan myself.  However,  I can't do more then about 13-14 in a single set,  but then again I am 53 yo.

I hope to be doing that well at 53.  hell......I hope to be alive at 53.

I used to do 3 sets of 7 on a machine with about 110 lbs of assistance, havent been to the gym in a while and have been doing s/b/r and body weight exercise, thinking about getting one of those in door jobbies. Any thoughts on the best version?

A friend uses Iron Gym, which seems to work really well.  He is over 6', so it must be tall enough, if you bend your legs or whatever.  Looked pretty slick to me.

cool I'll check it out, don't know when my strength building and weight loss will find that balance to let me actually do a few, but I am looking forward to the day.

I'm 50. I can do 9 chinups (palms facing me), 7 with parallel bars, and 6 with palms facing away. Goal is 10 of each.

Gator Fan Here!!! Im 42 5'10 235lbs  I  work up to 6-8 reps with 50lbs strapped to me. Dips I go up to 90lbs for bout 8-10 reps. My back workout is divided into 1 day all kinds of pullups bout 15-18 sets and the next back workout is all thickness with rows and deadlifts bout 18 sets. I did this bout 8 monthes ago and have had the best growth and strength increases Ive had in years.

I do 6 (palms-facing me), and 4 (palms-facing away) as part of my total body workouts. If I focused solely on just doing max pullup probably would be able to choke out one more of each. I also like to do inverted rows (set a bar about hip height, lay underneither, heels on the ground and pull up to the bar)

I am 44,  I can do 13 palm out to failure, not sure palm facing me - probably a few more...I try to do the palm out first to one short of failure and then add sets from there.   Nothing better than pull ups.

Opps, lied about my age, just had my 45th birthday on June 10th....

Simple.... I do 3 sets of 10 pull ups, wide arm, with a stop at the bottom just to make it hurt!
If people are failing to finish their reps, jump up on the last couple and slowly lower yourself to a count of 6 seconds. You will use your muscles eccentrically and 'teach' them if you can lower yourself, you can lift yourself!

I've never had any trouble with pullups but I am 39 and have trained with weights since I was in my early teens.  My background is more with power lifting, sports like football and track throwing events (shot, javelin and discus).

When I got more in to bodybuilding we used to hang a v-bar over the pullup bar, then pull our bodies up with our backs arched so we could hit our stomach to the v-bar.  Those were intense and even if you could do 20 regular pullups, you would struggle to get used to doing 8-10 of these.

I love dips too.  We used to strap heavy dumbells to our waist while we did them.

This is what happens to kids who grow up in the 70's and 80's being inspired by movies like Rocky I-V, Vision Quest, Van Damm movies, and Arnold movies.  lol

I love indoor rock climbing so I train all different kinds of pull-ups regularly. Currently I can do 40 in a row. When you can do them well throw in some core by doing L-hang pull ups (with legs held straight out in front of you), front levers (holding your body parallel to the floor), and one arms.

Since I started endurance training I can't do nearly as many as I could last winter.  I did three sets of ten without any extra weight yesterday.  Last fall I was doing three sets of ten with a 25lb weight

I can do 18 fully extended pull ups.

My workout routine for pull-ups is simple.

Perform 3 normal pull ups, rest 30 seconds.
Perform 3 wide-grip pull ups, rest 30 seconds.
Perform 3 narrow-grip pull ups, rest 30 seconds.

Make sure you don't go fast. Usually I do 2 seconds on the way up and 2 seconds on the way down. Also DO NOT use your legs, let them hang straight down or if you are like me and you're 6 feet tall, cross your ankles and bend your knees a bit but make sure you are not using them.

I repeat that over and over until I can't do any more.

Of course there are other types of pull-ups you can integrate into that workout.
(Optional: do crunches during the 30 second rest period)

Hope this helped someone!
