Inspired by the ladies thread - how many men out there can perform pullups?

I've been working on it this year. I like body weight exercises.

So far, I can do 6 without rest.

Another discussion point - how are you performing them? Wide/medium/narrow grip? Hands facing away from you or towards you?

So far, I'm working on wide grip/hands away and narrow grip/hand toward.

I can do 3 to 5 sets of 10 each now. When I started going back to the gym I weighed about 20 lbs more than I do now (and was much weaker) and could only do 2 or 3 total. There are days though were these things just kick my butt and I give up quick.

I love pull-ups! It's one of my best exercises. I can do 23 deadhang or 50 kipping. I'm one of those CrossFit weirdos that does pull-ups all the time.

Still need a rubber band assist but these are something I'm definitely working on. I have one of those in the door gizmos and the most comfortable way to do them on this particular bar is the "neutral grip" where the palms actually face each other. This is also supposed to be easier on the elbows.

If I do chin up grip (palms toward me) I can do 9 straight

The pull up grip  I can do 5 straight.

I weight 210, so I've got some gravity working against me.

Depending on the mood I'm in I can get 2 sets of 10, what's nice is that I'm doing this right now at ~ 10 lbs over my ideal race weight.  So as I start losing some weight I should start to increase reps per set or add more sets.

I do pullups with a med-wide pronated grip, to narrow or to wide bothers my one shoulder, and have left out the use of wrist straps, this has helped my grip stregnth as well.  They're part of my core workout and alternate them with push-ups.

Max right now is probably 11-12 dead hang and 15 kipping.  Back in my MUCH lighter days I could knock out 18 dead hang w/o much problem.

1 & 1/2 at 250. When I was in high school I could do one at 200 pounds. Guess I'm a bit stronger. Imagine how many I'll be able to do when I get back down to 200.

Right now I do as many as I can unassisted ( 1 1/2) then go over to the assist machine and do a set to failure palms facing, a set to failure of dips, a set up pulls up palms away to failure, another set of dips, set up pulls up palms facing me to failure, and one last set of dips. No resting between.

That's pretty good at 250. These are tough for us guys over 2 bucks. You know, if you'd like to maintain that strength, once you start losing weight, do a few sets of pull ups with additional weight - 5 to 10 lbs. is all you'll need initially.

when i first started doing pull ups (about a year and a half ago) i could only do sets of 5... and by my third set i could only do like 3? ive been consistently doing them since then... and i just recently i tried to do as many as i could and i did 20 in a row :]

i started pinching a dumbbell between my legs for heavy (25lb) and for regular (10-15lb) :]

oh and i hold it wide with my palms facing away from me (i go all the way down each time haha i dont do halfies)

keep at it and you will get up there in no time!

As of tonight I weigh 152 lbs., and I can do about 16 palm-out pullups nonstop. I usually do pullups in sets of 4x6 or 3x8.

Did my normal routine, but before going to the assist machine, I tried kipping pullups. I've never been able to time it right, but tonight something clicked. I got 3/4 of the way up, 2 times in a row.

Woohoo. Then I went and did my best numbers on the Assist machine.

I'm doing about 3 sets of 5 with the only rest being sets of about 5 dips. Should I be reducing the amount of assist I am using or keep going for a higher quantity?

Yikes. I can't even imagine how hard that will be.

Well... sorry to say I am 37 and 185lbs and have never been able to do one. I can almost get one chinup (palms facing toward me). However I am now doing simple fit, so I think I will be able to do one shortly!
