Subject: Running Sandals?

Has anyone ever tried sandals made specifically for running?  My feet sweat a lot and I'm very susceptible to athlete's foot, so I've wondered about running sandals.  The only kind I could find online, that looked at all promising, are these:

It just seems like such a great idea to me:  take the nice sole, cushioning, and support of a running shoe, but use a sandal-like top to allow for more breathing.  (And I vaguely remember seeing a thread once about someone using sandals for the run leg of an Ironman...)

Why not take a pair of running shoes and cut some holes in them in places that will not sacrifice support?

I just can't see how a sandal can come close to providing the kind of support and cushioning that a long distance running shoe can.
