Subject: Recommendations for running shoes
Thought I might be able to solicit some recommendations for a running shoe. I recently had my stride analyzed at a fitness expo and was told I overpronate. My current shoe is a neutral Nike Pegasus, which I bought when last year simply cause I didn't know any better. The people who analyzed my stride tried told me to buy Nike Air Trax, but I'm not inclined to buy Nike's again.

So, any suggestions for a heavier guy who overpronates?

Thanks for the help.

I'm a heavier runner with a neutral position, so I use New Balance 992s.

I get them from www.roadrunnersports.com, which has a fitting guide that will give you selections based on your needs.

Asics Gel Kayano

But really, you're better off going to a specialty running store that will give you specific recommendations. Or another one if you want an opinion different than the Nike one.

X2

There is more to the fit other than just the over pronation and a good store will fit you properly for your arches, weight, running gait etc.  Plus you should be able to get on the store's treadmill and try them out some.  I recently changed brands because Avia quit making the ones I liked.  By sizing and my slight over pronation 3 differant brands had a model that should work, but I noticed a significant differance with the Saucony's I wound up getting.

Thanks for the tips, I do appreciate the help.

However, I know you are right. I really need to running store and get analyzed and properly fitted.

Sooo...are you having any issues with the neutral shoe you're running in now?

Regardless of what an "expert" tells you, how do the shoes feel now? A big chain specialty running store (likely the biggest in Canada with a good reputaion) were convinced I was an overpronator and got me into stability shoes - twice - two different shoes because the first ones I couldn't run in, then I listened to the "expert" advice and ran with the second ones for an extended period - because they "told me to" in order to get used to them but I ended up injuring myself. I ended up at a physiotherapist who does a proper gait analysis (not just watched me walk or run on a treadmill)

I now wear a neutral cushioned shoe (Asics Numbus; on my third pair) now and never have pain.

I am also 'slightly heavy' at 180 lbs and 5'10" and I have late stage overpronation. I run in Brooks Radius 7's and like them alot.

But the key is - go get an expert fitting from a reliable running supply store.

I'm not necessarily having any problems in the nuetral shoe that I can pin-point, other than some bleeding in my toes, which I'm assuming is due to the shoes being slightly too small (I bought them a bit smaller than my usual cross-trainers). However, last year was my first year of training, and the first time I'd ever purchased running shoes, so I don't have any base of comparison.

I'm in the Tampa Bay area and have already started looking for some running stores. I've also made some friends at the local bike shop who are also triathletes, so I'll ask them where they go. I did stop at one store not too long ago and wasn't impressed...didn't seem like they had anything to offer in regards to analysis, just a supply of shoes and accessories.

Thanks again all for the insight.

Sue7013 is an ortho doc and sends lots of her runners to a good running store that videotapes gait and fits shoes well.  You may want to ask her the name of the store. She lives in the general area you do.

I am slightly larger than your average runner (6-1, 185) and overpronate. I have been using the Brooks "Beast" shoes for years with good results.

Prior to switching to special stability shoes, I had all sorts of issues with my knees. It all went away when I switched shoes.

Oh, and I ran in them when I was 200-210 pounds as well with good results.

Seems like the Brooks Beast is a pretty popular selection.

And thanks Kathy...I just sent Sue7013 a private message in regards to that running store.
