Subject: Why Would You Tri? Negative People
I have had so many people (mostly non-athlete types), who give me a hard time about triathalons, and training in general. Why would you subject yourself to that? You too old (only 35), you have bad knees, you are away from your kids too much, cycling is dangerous...blah, blah, blah. It's only become worse since my knee surgery since people feel compelled to tell me how I should just give up my goal of a 2008 tri because it's too rough on me (my doctor is certainly not one of those people by the way).

It's funny to me that people feel empowered enough to insult my family's way of life. Working out, and sports in general, is religion to us, and I can't help but laugh at the people who attack it.

I refrain from telling lazy f@t @sses that I despise their way of life, and that sitting on their couch is literally killing them, so what makes them think they can call me "nuts" for wanting to do what we enjoy?

Seriously, it is their way of justifying their non-athletic traits.  If it is easy to make an excuse as to why they will not do it, they won't feel so bad about it .....

Just ask them if they'd like to join you and that it could really help them out throughout their whole life.  If they continue to argue/discredit/negatively impact then just tell them that you don't like to surround yourself with naysayers and that they can have a good day somewhere else.

There are enough people out there that support the athlete that they don't need to be around the people that don't.

I think a lot of it is their personal limitations and not being able to keep up with the Jonses mentality.  They can work more hours, or eat at nice restaurants, or buy lots of cr@p (often on credit) to keep up with what the neighbors are doing, but it takes effort to actually get out there and do something physically.  Fock em.  There is likely some jealousy there because its something they cant do cuz they are convinced they cant do it.  I would throw something back at em about not caring who's winning American Idol or what kind of new flavor technology Doritos is coming up with.  To each their own, but seriously, tell em to back off.

Tris are hard, and I have the utmost respect for all participants no matter thier body type, ability, whatever, its just a killer community and way of life. I might be relegated to jock strap this year for tri season, but I will be training for something gnarly this year. (I will be doing the Sierra Century bike ride if running is out). My brother in law is a high altitude moutain climber, and I quietly hate that he does it since it's so freaking dangerous, but I would never tell him not to do what he loves.

I need a snappy comeback that's not too insulting...any ideas?

I think they do it so they feel better about sitting on the couch and not exercising.  I don't understand why insulting someone else makes them feel better about themselves, but that certainly seems to be the case.

I try to not let it bother me.  If I cared about what everyone else thought, I probably wouldn't do anything.  I completely understand the frustration as I don't get why people think they can judge other people's lives.

Something about a Jerkstore?  Manboobs? Are those too insulting?  Seriously, my best 'comeback' is to hit my goals and keep growing in this sport.  I have made a pretty good life for myself using others doubts as fuel.  As someone said, if it gets too obnoxious and they dont get it and have problems, time to find new friends.  By achieving more, Mr Too Old is proving this person wrong.  By being a good parent, you are proving them wrong.  Etc, etc, etc.

I agree with everyone else. I once read or heard somewhere that everything you say negative about someone else comes back in the end to jealousy. I think about that now every time I want to say something negative, figure out what the cause is, and act on it.
I guess that's more advice for the people talking to you, but the point is there

Tell them that competing in a triathlon is something you've always wanted to do and training is not only healthy, but also fun, so why would they want to discourage you.

Usually something like that makes them realize how they are coming across.

I've come to realize that most people are scared to attempt what they feel is impossible. They live their entire lives in this little box, never trying to escape. When they see people who are out there, living life, and going for their dreams, it makes them feel like the walls of their box are closing in.

I can tell you I will not be changing my goals because of anything anyone ever says. My point was more to the fact that people somehow feel like we can't comment on so much in this world because we are PC, but if you want to slam someone for being athletic, its okay.

I have lots of insults, and "F - *ff Fatty" is one I would freely use...if I wasn't such a nice guy. Seriously, it's funny, in an unfunny way, that people feel like its okay to attack positive aspects in one's life. can you imagine telling your co-worker that she shouldn't waste 4 hours a weekend going to church?

I'm partially sensative about it since I'm frustrated about being injured, and more than one person has said, "well, you did that to yourself" since I got hurt playing sports by choice (it was actually my job when it started).

Nothing will change my pursuit for the perfect blend of mind, body & soul through being a better father and husband. That's means I have to take care of myself too.

P.S. My favorite chips are Maui Onion Hawaiian style...those beat everything else.

Why do we train?  Why do we participate in triathlons?  When couch potatoes ask these questions and are being a tad too derisive about it, I simply say "The same reason that you sit on your fat in front of the tv, guzzling beer and scratching your balls, because I like it!"

One of my neighbors is always at me as I come and go on various workouts. He is always saying, you can get there faster in a car, whenever he sees me running or on the bike. Until this summer he was giving me crap while a bunch of the dads were talking. So I challenged him to a race, my bicycle against his car. From our street to the Hy-vee, we needed more liquor for the block party. " the road to the hy vee is slightly downhill, 25 mph speed limit, usually has traffic and BIG speed bumps he has to slow up for. I can go around them. It is about 2.5 miles total. Needless to say, after the speed bumps and a couple other vehicles. I got to pass him 3 times in that distance, and ultimately beat him to the store. No more trash talk from him! I should have bet something good like a summers worth of lawnmowing!!!!!!!

Just say "I'm so glad you care about me.  I'm worried about you, too, with all the <insert their bad habits here, ex. smoking, drinking, eating crap food, not exercising, etc., or just say SH1T>  you've been doing!  Have you had a check-up lately?  How's the cholesterol count and heartrate?"  etc. etc. etc.

I'd give it right back, and have.  They can dish it out, but they can't take it.

You know that you're doing well, getting fit, and having a good time, so why should you let it upset you?  Shake it off!  Don't let them get to you, and don't worry about them.

I had a conversation with a coworker about this the other day. It is infuriating to me. I am on the smaller side, and remember that age old rule - never ask a woman her weight? I can't tell you how many people feel free to comment on my weight, size and/or ask me how much I weigh or what size clothes I wear. Seriously - can you imagine asking an obese person what size clothing they wear or what they weigh? But, apparently it's ok because I'm small (and in all honesty, I am NOT that small, just smaller then the average overweight American).

I also get so many negative remarks on my training and have been accused regularly of being addicted to exercise. "why would you run that far - isn't that what cars are for?" "You went biking in THIS weather - why?" or the very sarcastic "what did you do this weekend - ride your bike?". Um, yes, I did, and I had a great time. What did you do?

Sorry I have no suggestions for you, but know you're not alone. Also, look at it as inspiration. Each time I get too much negativity and feel I can't handle it anymore, I up my goals instead of decrease them. I also surround myself with people who understand as much as possible. Biking buddies, running buddies, etc. It helps to know I'm not the only "crazy" one :-)

I blog about this stuff on my site www.payyourselffitness.com and always welcome other's stories and thoughts.

In a nutshell, if I spend 7-10 hours a week training . . . I am a bad father, selfish, a bad husband and generally nuts.
If I work 60 hours a week . . . I am a dedicated worker, a father who provides, a go getter, etc.

This is F**ked up. Being fat and out of shape is one of the biggest issues the world is going to face (US especially) in the coming decades, but we will not change our outlook on fitness.

I see it sometimes... Ive now got myself fairly surrounded by people who now accept what I do, and are more encouraging.. but for a while there would be comments. A few even went as far as to tell me that it made them feel lazy what I was doing. Nothing like just admitting it! Now I dont so much get negative comments, I get the good for you, and its great that you found something you enjoy, but I also get excuses as to why they could never do what i do. And they just offer that freely, I learned a long time ago not to say much.
