Now that its warming up (sorry, I live in Florida) I want to ride after work but it's often late by the time I'm finished with my ride.  Some folks in a riding group have mega $400-$800 lights which are out of my league.  Can anyone suggest a good one (headlight and tailight)?

tailight.. Superblinky by Planet Bike... tiny but it's insanely bright and visible from a LONG way away.

+1 on the Planet Bike Superblinkey.

For the front, it depends on your where you'll be riding and how fast. Do you want to see or been seen? Will it be used for road only or will you take it off road on the trails on a mtn bike? Are your roads brightly lit or dark? Will you be training at 20mph+? What's your budget?

These answers will help determine which light your looking for.

For me, I ride at night in 'suburban' streets and some dark fire roads. Sometimes in groups and often solo too. Since the off road trails aren't technical, I can get away w/ less than the HID or 500 lumens (and in the $300+ range). For the road, I need to see road bumps and hazards at 20mph +.

My setup is a Dinotte headlite and a Fenix L2D flashlight on the helmet. The Dinotte throws a wider beam and is on my bar while the Fenix is a spotlight and is on my helmet. Combined lights are over 300 lumens.

I just wrote up a quick review of these on my blog and also check out www.roadbikereview.com as they just published thier LED Light Shootout.  Also, www.bikeforums.net has a section for lights. Another light resource is http://candlepowerforums.com/.

+1 on that.  I've also got 2 'helmet mounted' head lights.  I take a few of the head mounted LED work lights.  I've got a 1watt and 3watt from Home Depot.  These work amazingly, and bright as heck, and take rechargeable AA's  all for a total cost of ~$40.

The other thing I take along is an ANSI Highway worker saftey vest (also from homedepot) goal is to look like a x-mas tree.
