Subject: A Book for your Christmas List

This is a standard reference for exercise professionals or the geeky athlete.  Naturally, I put it on my own Christmas wish list.

Exercise Physiology: Energy, Nutrition, and Human Performance
by William D. McArdle, Frank I. Katch, Victor L. Katch

From Book News, Inc.
New edition of a text that provides a strong academic foundation in nutrition, energy transfer, and exercise training. The seven chapters discuss nutrition as the base for human performance, energy for physical activity, systems of energy delivery and utilization, enhancement of energy capacity, the effect of environmental stress, the effect of exercise on successful aging and disease prevention, and body composition, energy balance, and weight control. New to this edition are about 60 new topic headings as well as a chapter on the physiologic and anatomic effects of exposure to microgravity in space exploration, information on current research, a molecular biology content area, and interviews with nine contemporary scientists. Contains about 600 figures, charts, tables, and color photographs.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Thanks, I always love to hear about good books to read. It can be quite overwhelming with all the information that is out there.

Not related to this book, but one I read that was a kick in the a$$; I Run Therefore I Am...Nuts, by bill Rodgers. It says what every runner thinks, pretty funny.

What other books are do you want or would recommend?  I was thinking about Sport Psychology for Cyclists ($10) and The Quotable Cyclists $10.  Could anyone comment on these or other good books?

dgillen,

I haven't seen either book that you ask about but they sound good.

There is another book Physiology of Sport and Exercise by Jack H. Wilmore, David L. Costill that is a similar exercise physiology reference.  I haven't read it.

I bought my brother-in-law the McArdle book last year for Christmas.  I thumbed through it then and have been wanting my own copy ever since.

In non sports stuff, I just read Isaac Newton by James Gleick.  It's a pretty short but good book.  Major geek tastes on this end.

A book that any athlete can benefit from is Volleyball Cybernetics (there is also a Basketball version) and although there is some information geared towards Volleyball, the majority is general mental training and mental preparation for competition. Although I've had limited sucess with coaching from this framework (hard to get teenage boys to buy in to the program) if has been very useful to me in maintaining a positive focus during my training.
