The last time I posted about my swimming (or lack thereof) I received such great advice here, I though I would go for round two. Sunday I had a great day in the pool swimming 500 meters. 350 meters free style with no swimming aides, and 150 meters with a buoy. All 500 meters were with alternate breathing (which is a big step forward from a few weeks ago). This was the first time I swam 50 meters consecutive without stopping, and did it a couple of times. The remaining laps were with a rest of about 30 seconds at the 25 meter mark.

This morning I seemed to go backwards from Sunday. Didn't feel comfortable and really was out of breath before 50 meters. The rests after 25 meters seemed to stretch to 45-60 seconds.

My form, which I was convinced previously was not that important, has improved but still needs work. I now realize this is the most important aspect of improvement. Although not as severe as a couple of weeks ago, I still feel I am gasping for air after 25 or 50 meters.

My first tri is 6 weeks from Saturday and my first goal is to finish and my 2nd goal is to finish without stopping. I really want to hit that 2nd goal!

I will update again in a couple of weeks! Thanks to everyone on this site for all the encouragement and advice. My wife and kids get tired of me saying at dinner each night..."well, on BT, they say...."

Stick with it and keep working on the drills. Seems like when I do good drill work it carries over to the pool. Sunday I was struggling somewhat so I stopped worked on a few drills and then all of a sudden I swam 400M straight without stopping and could've kept going if I had more time. I'm trying to force myself to not get lazy with the drills and stay with them.

A couple of things.

1. Every day is not going to be a good day in the pool.  I have some days I'm on fire and other days I feel like I am swimming in mud.  This is normal.  So, I wouldn't worry too much about a bad day.

2. My only advice on being out of breath would be to try to swim slower...a lot of beginners try to swim too fast from the get go.

I had this happen to me a few weeks ago.  I did 400 yards for the first time non stop, then the next time, I could barely go 50 w/o feeling out of breathe.  Next time after that, I was fine.  It was just a bad workout and it worked itself out.  Just keep practicing and working on form and don't dwell on the bad workout.  You'll do great!

Sounds like you are getting conditioned to me.  With only a few weeks to go, I would keep at it and keep working your form.  The benefits of a good stroke will outweigh a taper.  Don't forget about sighting.

I wouldn't worry about a bad day compared to a previous day. It happens to me in all three events all the time.

Maybe you should try really slow swimming for a while when you get winded and concentrate on form for a couple of laps. Take a stroke and glide, then take another and try to feel what gives you resistance in the water, both slowing you down and propelling you. You may breathe every stroke if you glide enough, but I think intervals with normal pace and really slow pace might help.

I have received this advice from a number of you on here, so it is obviously important. My problem is, I feel I am going slow! Maybe I am not. I think I will have my wife video tape me so I can see for myself. Maybe I am not going as slow as I think I am.

Thanks everyone!
