Subject: Syracuse University Graduate School- Exercise Science- I'm in!!!

I just visisted Syracuse University graduate school, and am going to enroll this fall.

I had offers at Buffalo University, Springfield College, University of New Hampshire, University of Maine, and made the waiting list at West Virginia U.-- but think Syracuse is the place for me.

They're offering me at minimum an assistantship that will cover my tuition (once I transition into the phD I'll be getting a significant stipend, but the masters bascially covers tuition), and I'm still waiting to here about other funding.

I am going into exercise physiology phD (well, masters first, but straight into phD).

Anyone have advice about Syracuse U., the city, living in the area, cool places, the program, exercise physiology in general, or anything else you want me to know?

I'm a bit worried about finding good biking?  I come from a town of 2000 people- syracuse is a major city to me!

Just thought I'd share, I'm really proud I made it into such a great school (and that they liked me and thought so highly of me).

I lived in Syracuse for a year in the 70's...long time ago I know.  LOVE that town.  Great college town for sure.  Don't know anything about their program.

Congratulations on getting in though, probably a tough school to get into still...

Awesome! Congrats .

A good friend of mine is about 3/4 through his PhD (in English Lit) there. He's really enjoyed it, and I know he cycles quite a lot and hasn't really had major problems (aside from the normal punctures, cut offs, etc). He's from Pittsburgh so he's kinda used to lots of snow, but it seems that that's the biggest challenge, is the cold and snow during the winter.

Awesome Man!  In regards to biking, if we can bike in Atlanta, you can bike there.  Just ask all of the bike shops and you'll find the groups and routes.

The only cool place I know about is the Dinosaur BBQ. Good food! Seems like a nice area, though.

I hope you like snow! Seriously, though, the Finger Lakes area is fantastic for biking. I grew up about 45 minutes from Syracuse and it is a beautiful part of the country. Carousel Mall is awesome too.

Just never cheer for the Orange and if you get to meet Jim Boeheim make sure you ask him why he doesnt have the balls to play at St. Bonaventure

Congrats.

BTW : maybe you can figure out why the basketball / football arena is named after Carrier, the man who invented the air conditioner, is NOT air conditioned!

dudes he's from VT- he can handle the weather!  I have friends who did their PhD's there in Info Science, and loved it.  Great sports, great academics, relatively inexpensive to live.  But oh, so sad to be leaving the best state in the US

Trust me, snow is probably the best thing you can have for your PhD. You will get much more work done during the fall/winter time.

On the other hand, if you went to southern california, you would be used to the nice weather, and wouldn't be depressed as in the colder climates... where you are spending the few warm months you have in the lab.

Yeah, snow is not an issue (my home town is 21 miles from the canadian border in vt).

Thanks for all the congrats.  I was worried about getting in, but apparantly they really like me- I met with just about all the faculty on Thursday and got an extensive meeting with there "top" phD student.  Seems like the school rocks.

The coolest thing I saw was in their human performance lab.  They have a pool with a MOVEABLE bottom!  Like, the depth adjusts- and it's JUST for doing research.  No recreational use AT ALL.  That building is SICK.  It's got all kinds of gadgets and machines.  PLUS they're building a whole new lab for the exercise science department- including a new fitness center dedicated to JUST reasearch!

I'm really excited- now I (we) just have to find my finance a teaching job and it will be all set!
