First off...I am definitely up for BT get-togethers.  I'm usually the one who organizes them, but this time, someone else can handle that job, but I will definitely come to anything we have planned.  I'd certainly like to do the practice swims, which brings me to...

Second...
For a while now I've been stoic about this whole thing.  OK, it's an Ironman...big day...lots of work...but I've done it before...and I'll get thru it.  As of today...I would like everyone to know that I'm finally FREAKING OUT about CdA.  Bike...nope.  Run...no way.  SWIM...uuuuuuuummm..yeah.  Distance, not a problem...waves, who cares, I swim in the ocean...wind, whatever, I'm from Florida, I'm used to it.  LAKE TEMPERATURE...HOLY HELL!!!!  I have been reading this here CdA thread and the idea of swimming in a lake where now they are suggesting people wear neoprene caps and booties...wow, I'm just so unthrilled with that idea.  I will buy them if I have to though...I hate cold water.

You and me both, Q! I think the Y at 78 is too freakin cold. I definitely want to do the practice swims so I know how cold the cold water is gonna feel. No surprises. I can't train for it here, my race next weekend isn't even gonna be wetsuit legal! Water temps are already pushing 80 in the lakes.

I'm just gonna hydrate well so I can pee early in the suit to warm it up! I'd organize a get together but since I know nothing about the area or an IM experience, and I've got my hands full with 3 older ladies coming with me, I'm probably not the right person....

Gotta love a short race to get tuned up.  My taper begins with a sprint on June 8th.  The day after my last long training day...a 120 mile bike.  It'll be good incentive to get a fast bike time in the sprint since my butt will definitely NOT want to be on a saddle for very long.

I'll post something that I have suggested about swims, especially cold swims, which I have talked to other triathletes about.

You can "train" for cold water regardless of where you are located. There are two nasty elements to the cold water swim.

1) The ability to withstand the cold for an hour or two. There really isn't a good way to train for this except to swim long distances in cold water. However at the temps we are facing the addition of caps, booties and thermal wetsuit undershirts. http://www.tactics.com/oneill/thermo-x-vestshould keep anybody warm enough for the duration of the swim.

2) The second element is the shock and/or panic that can occur when you stick your…uh, let's go with face, into cold water. As soon as your mind and body registers "Mother F%@&#r that water is cold" your breathing becomes more rapid and your heart rate soars. This physiological reaction is pretty much the same as a panic attack and extreme exertion so the triathlete may either think to themselves "I'm having a panic attack!" or "I'm going out way to hard." Either one of these thoughts can serve to limit or stop performance. This cold water shock is something you can train for anywhere you have a bath tub, water and ice.

So the drill is to fill your tub with cold water and then dump in some ice. I've gone with as little as a full tray from an automatic ice maker in a standard fridge (probably too little) all the way to five 10-pound bags of ice (probably too much but it was shocking!). When the water is nice and cold you get in and work on relaxing. Notice how your body reacts to the cold and bring yourself to a state of calmness. This will help on race day because you have already practiced relaxing in cold water, separating your body's reaction to the cold from its reaction from the exertion you will be generating and the excitement you will be feeling.

Another benefit of the ice bath is that it helps speed recovery after a particularly hard run or bike.

Hope someone finds this helpful

Yes, that is why we all need to do the practice swims at 7:00 AM. So we can realize what the water will be like on race day.

Last year we all met by the HUGE Gatorade bottle at 7:00 AM on Thursday morning. I am planning on doing the same this year. . from there we can decide other things as far as getting together goes.

Sounds good to me.  I am familiar with taking an ice bath...I hate them.  They're good for ya...but I hate them.

Last year in Arizona, the water was 67 degrees.  I guess I thought THAT was cold back then.  This should be a new experience.  I definitely think that doing the practice swims every day before the race is a good idea.  I hope maybe the water will warm up into the 60's before race day.  If that happens, I'm all good.  If not...well...I guess I'll have to deal.

I will be there

Probably going to be taking full advantage of the Practice Swim opportunity if nothing else than to burn off excess energy.

I have done Open Water Swims in water as cold as 52 and surfed in water as cold as 48 and all I can say is, Swim Socks and a Squid Lid are going to be huge benefit for all of us.

We will all be a bit hypothermic out there regardless so let's be careful.

I will be there Thursday Morning to meet up with the rest of the BT Kids and will have my trusty BT Shirt on. I don't really know very many of the BT folks doing the race but really, that is an opportunity

This cold water is starting to spook me too! I ordered my aqua socks yesterday!! The temp for my half was at 57 and I freaked in that! I didn't warm up and had booties on, so I was pretty comfortable until I stuck my head in the water! Wasn't wearing a neoprene hat, but I have one and will have to try it out! Didn't like the way the chin strap felt so I didn't think I could swim in it, but haven't tried! My lake is nice and warm now, but I am still going out on Sunday for an OWS and will wear my wetsuit anyway.
I would definately like to meet up, but we won't be getting in until sometime Thurs afternoon. I can meet for a swim on Fri for sure. Need to get at least one swim in that water! Does everyone have a BT t-shirt? I was wondering if I should get one to be easier to spot! Do you all wear the BT tattoos?

Now there is an idea for Marma to sell a cool product

I don't think everyone has BT Shirts. I got mine for upgrading my membership last year.

I am sure there will be plenty of BT kids doing the swim on Friday as well since we all have to be in town that day anyway.

There are Gatorade swims at the lake each morning at 7:00AM. I will be there Thursday morning to swim and Friday morning just to say hi. I will also swim on Sat morning at 7:00.

So, let's plan on meeting on Thursday morning at 7AM and then if you can make Thursday great or if you can't then Friday morning at 7AM.
If you don't have a BT shirt, then just look for someone with it on and say hi.

What do you all think?

I'll be there for the swim Friday morning and will be looking for BT peeps.  What goes on at the swim, is it just a lifeguarded swim? How many people are there, is it just get in and go? How far do most swim, 1 loop?

Sorry for all the Questions, this is new to me. I wish I could do both Thursday and Friday swims but I don't think I can pick up my wetsuit until mid morning on Thursday. And we are getting in late on Wed and so I'll need my beauty rest

The swim is more-or-less get your wetsuit on and go jump in the lake. Usually 20-30 minutes is enough. 15 is actually plenty.

Okay, I heard from my other cousin in Post Falls. She lives on the river immediately down stream from the lake. The water temp has risen to 53 degrees and she seems to think it will continue to do so. Everyone take a deep breath and relax.

Thanks for the update.

Now that we are mostly out of the woods (In terms of Hypothermia) we can all start obsessing about the weather.

The current long range forcast window takes us through the 11th and the weather looks to be really good for the next 10 days. Let's just hope for more of the same

Weather last year was perfect unless you were still hobbling at T+15 hrs. It got a little chilly when the wind blew off of the lake. Year before it was 90+ so lets hope and pray for moderate temps.

Ugh!  Work is taking me away from my last week of serious training before tapering.  My coach is biting her nails for me too.

I'm just going to show up with my bike and take it from there.

I see a lot of cold water in my future.  brrrrrr
