Oooops, double post!

How about........ you know it's cold when your first few breaths outside make you cough and your lungs sting. Ick.

when your breath freezes and becomes icicles in mid air. Brrrrrrrr. Thank God I live in Colorado! (I'm originally from Chicago where the hawk made it much colder than I've ever been living near the mountains).

That happens. Happened to our mail-lady one year when I was a grade school kid. Temp was a record low, something under -50F w/ winChill ... maybe even -80F w/ WChill ... I don't remember the specifics. She stumbled into our house (we let her in) and her eyes were frozen shut.

I ran outside at 5 this morning (Northern Illinois) @ 16F, -1 w/ WChill and it was "surprisingly nice". 2 sweatshirts under a running jacket and sweat pants under some running tights did the job. I probably need to get a full-faced mask at some point. I'd rather die frozen than die from boredom on a treadmill.

...you actually have to put on a jacket to go to work. First time for me all year to wear a jacket, in NC. I miss Minnesota, where the snow squeaks like styrofoam when you walk on it!

My problem is the wind. I can handle the cold, but when the wind blows so hard it bounces your truck around on the highway, ya know ya got some problems.

Last year I was camping in January and I had a nalgene in the bottom of my sleeping bag. It froze during the night. That morning we had to build a fire to thaw the fuel line in our camp stove so we could boil water. It lit once and then pop went out, froze shut the fuel line. After a cup of tea though we were all good and ready to ski to the next hut!

Noworries, it was a blast!

Mick

Yes, my first.  I did a half IM in Sept, and want to do a full IM and figured I needed to do some run work to finish.  With winter here, it is the perfect time to develop some serious long running and I have heard some good things about the Austin (from bear and others).

This will be my third Austin Marathon (2000 & 2004). It will be my 8th overall stand alone marathon, my ninth if you count IM Florida.

-When you finish your run and your jacket is covered in ice, from the sweat wicking to the outer layer.

-When your eyes tear up as soon as you feel the cold air

-When the only skin a person can see when they look at you is the two little slits for your eyes between your face mask and your hat.

-When you see the eskimo dogs inside
