Subject: New Bike Need Opinions Fast
Hi All,

I found this bike on ebay and I was wondering if I could get some opinions on it. I would love to bring this new addition home and add to my mini arsenal, but I want to make sure that I'm making an intelligent decision. I plan on having a very active '05 season with an Olympic distance tri towards the end of the season. I also plan on doing a full Ironman in 2006. Hopfully these goals will aid in the opinion sharing. Please help! Here's the link to the bike if you all could give it a once over.

Thanks a million times over,

Shauna

That's Trek's entry-level tri bike, 1999 model makes it six years old. IF it's your size (most important), you still have no way of judging hoew hard it's been abused. Does not come with pedals (~$100), seat (>$50) and wheels (>$250), so if you pay the "buy it now" price you're looking at $1,000 investment for a six-year-old pig in a poke.

Plenty of new tri bikes out there for $1000 or less.

Plus another "75-100 dollars for shipping." I'm in with the Bear on this one...go down to your local bike shop and see whats there for the same money. If you get a standard road bike, you can add aero bars for what you would have paid for the shipping. Plus you'll get a warranty on the bike, they'll spend time to make sure you get the one that fits you, it will include pedals, a seat, and wheels with new tires. I'm an ex-bike racer with 30 years experience, plus a bike mechanic for the team I was coaching. The only way I'd buy this bike on Ebay would be if I could get it for the starting bid of $75 (which you can't because it won't meet the reserve). I'd look elsewhere and avoid the headaches this deal will end up costing you.

What may seem like a "bargain" will only wind up costing you over $1000 to bring it up to speck.  Go see a Cervélo dealer ... you can get a brand new 2004 Dual with full Ultegra for $1499; there will be no shipping, no assembling and you will be properly fitted on it by an expert!  The Dual is more than just a good beginner tri-bike, stock Duals have been used by pro triathletes in Ironman competitions who merely switched the wheelset.

I would recommend buying a new bike from a local bike shop. They will fit the bike to your frame, and you will be able to test ride the bike. In addition, most bike shops will do free tune-ups for the life of the bike or at least for a couple of years. If you're looking for a deal, try to find a 2004 model. There are still a lot of them out there. Best of luck!

Keep looking. Wheels will kill you pricewise, but if you keep your eyes open, you can get a used Tri-bike with full Ultegra for $600 on th'eBay.

Height alone may not be an adequate indicator of similar size. I'd ask them some questions on inseam, armlength, etc.
